LONG NOTES:  Notes on Bruce Ames article “Musings in the twilight of my career”. [Bruce is one of my idols] His chori bar seems worth considering.  I realized that adequate levels of ~40 vitamins and minerals needed as cofactors in thousands of metabolic reactions were critical for maintaining a healthy metabolism, and thus for longevity and prevention of chronic disease.  The Triage Theory provides a mechanistic rationale for such damage: shortage of a nutrient triggers a built-in rationing mechanism that allocates the scarce nutrient to proteins needed for immediate survival (survival proteins), at the expense of those needed for long-term survival (longevity proteins). Many as-yet-unknown longevity vitamins and proteins likely remain to be discovered. In general, prevention of degenerative diseases of aging requires expertise in metabolism, nutrition, biochemistry and regulatory functions.  The clinical trials (which did not require a change of diet) demon- strated that consumption of two CHORI-bars each day for as short a period as 2-weeks by predominantly lean adults significantly increased HDL-c, particularly large HDL [30]. Longer trials (2-months) in over- weight/obese adults resulted in additional significant changes in the direction of decreased risk of future disease in both HDL and LDL lipid particle profiles, triglycerides, insulin resistance and, in addition, sta- tistically significant decreases in weight, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate [31]. These results provided strong sup- port for the concept that the key to reducing disease risk in all people is to restore a healthy metabolism.

Reader inquiry: Value of resveratrol– I take it daily, as it has tremendous evidence of benefit, and none of harm.  At the link are articles and where I purchase it.

Reader inquiry: Gelatin in supplements, what about for vegetarians? When eaten in foods, gelatin is considered safe by the FDA. Gelatin is not vegetarian. Animal gelatin is obviously an animal product though.  One can find vegetarians supplements, but it is necessary to search for specific ones from different companies.

Flavonoid apigenin (in Mito-C) is a novel pharmacological target to treat metabolic diseases. It is an inhibitor of the NAD+ ase CD38: implications for cellular NAD+ metabolism, protein acetylation, and treatment of metabolic syndrome.

Reader question: How much melatonin is worth taking? I take 3mg 4 times a week at bedtime, primarily because I heard at an AGE meeting 20 years ago that it turns on many genes of youth and turns off many associated with age. More of why I take it But here is more about it: To understand when melatonin can be beneficial, it’s important to know more about its role in the sleep-wake cycle.  Many consumers are familiar with the bottled version of melatonin — around 6 million U.S. adults reach for it. But melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone the brain produces in response to darkness to help our bodies know when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to be awake.  When melatonin hits the bloodstream (typically, a few hours before bedtime), it reduces alertness and “facilitates our ability to fall asleep,” explains David Neubauer, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine. It also helps cool off the brain and the body, “which helps you sleep better.” There are risks for overuse or for some people.

MS patient regains ability to walk. Malia Litman, from Dallas Texas, was unable to walk due to her MS condition. Then she discovered the stem cell treatment being trialed at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem.  Thanks to the treatment, she was able to dance with her son Zachary at his wedding.

Linking diet, bacteria, and the heart. An international study has shown that the green Mediterranean (MED) diet modifies the bacterial population in the gut. These changes in the microbiome can bring substantial health benefits, including reduced cardiac risk.

AARP Bad for your liver: Too much sugar, kava, obesity, vitamin A supplements, soft drinks, acetaminophen, transfats, one drink a day for women and up to 2 per day for men,

AARP: More than half your body weight comes from water. So if your levels are off, it can show up in a surprising number of ways. Mild dehydration can make you feel tired, give you a headache, and affect your mood and focus. And when you push yourself hard at the gym, all that sweating actually lowers how much blood you have for a bit.  By the time you get the urge to quench your thirst, you’re already a little dehydrated. As long as you pay attention and snag a drink when your body tells you to, it’s not a problem. For older adults, the lag might be a little longer. So it can help to make a habit of drinking water.  Older adults need to be on the lookout because your sense of thirst gets duller with age. If you’re not sure you’re drinking enough, check the color of your pee. Clear or pale yellow means you’re all set. Darker means you need to drink up.

AARP: 7 things you should clean: dishwasher, oven, ceiling fan blades, reusable grocery bags, drier vent, mattress (vacuum, baking soda, revacuum), kitchen sponge,
