SYNOPSES OF ARTICLES THIS MONTH
1a. Eat strawberries – This study compared the effects of supplementation with a polyphenol-rich pomace from strawberry (US) and a strawberry pomace without most of these compounds (PS)…The polyphenols lowered serum insulin, liver total cholesterol, and conjugated dienes. 1b. Eat blueberries – Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated that blueberry (BB) extract exhibited antitumor activity against MDA-MB-231 triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells and decreased metastatic potential in vitro.1c. Eat yogurt – Probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri (mentioned frequently at the Linus Pauling meetings as a basis to eat a teaspoon of yogurt or probiotics every day) alleviates irritable bowel syndrome and stomach distension
Avoid adopting a Western diet – 2a. People moving to the US suffer stroke, obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia if they adopt our Western diet. Article explores Chinese immigrant dietary patterns. 2b. This article shows Mexican immigrant dietary patterns also change to hazardous Western diet.
3a. Australian people need more fruit, cereal, and variety 3b. Many Mexican American women need more folic acid 3c. US people need more vitamins A, C, D, E, calcium, and magnesium, but overdose on niacin and zinc – Analysis of 2003-06 NHANES data. 3d. MOST AMERICANS ARE DEFICIENT IN VITAMIN E.
4. Children of 12-20 months need 4mcg (160IU) vitamin D/day, and usually get enough from milk.
