SUMMARY – Just a few headlines as we head into summer:
1. High protein diet inhibits fat formation
2. Reservatrol helps the heart
3. Choline intake should be even higher – Overall, 550 mg per day. An egg has 112 mg.
4. Maternal vitamin D level vital for birth weight – among white mothers, the lowest risk is from 60 to 80 nmol/L.
5. Coffee good to prevent heart disease(CVD) – Risk was 1 for never, 0.48 for 1-2 cups/d.
6. Yet another study shows fish oil lowers heart disease risk
SYNOPSES OF ARTICLES THIS MONTH
1. High protein diet inhibits fat formation – It has been suggested that high-protein (HP) diets may favor weight management by lowering energy intake and reducing body fat. We conclude that the inhibition of de novo lipogenesis from dietary carbohydrate … may participate in limiting the adiposity induced by HP feeding.
2. Reservatrol helps the heart – [see reservatrol link] Cardiac hypertrophy is a compensatory enlargement of the heart due to either volume overload (VO) and/or pressure overload (PO) that develops into heart failure if left untreated. The polyphenol resveratrol has been reported to regress PO-induced cardiac hypertrophy…Treatment with resveratrol also significantly reduced oxidative stress in cardiac tissue…
3. Choline intake should be even higher – Overall, these data suggest that choline intake exceeding current dietary recommendations preserves markers of cellular methylation and attenuates DNA damage in a genetic subgroup of folate-compromised men. It was better to get 550 mg per day. An egg has 112 mg.
4. Maternal vitamin D level vital for birth weight – Maternal vitamin D deficiency has been associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, but its association with fetal growth restriction remains uncertain. There was a U-shaped relation between serum 25(OH)D and risk of SGA among white mothers, with the lowest risk from 60 to 80 nmol/L.
5. Coffee good to prevent heart disease(CVD) – Participants drank coffee never, occasionally, 1–2 cups/d, and 3 cups/d. For CVD mortality in women, the odds were 1.00, 0.56, 0.48, and 0.45, respectively.
6. Yet another study shows fish oil lowers heart disease risk – In conclusion, in populations with a low fish consumption, EPA+DHA and fish may lower fatal CHD and MI risk in a dose-responsive manner.
