SHORT NOTES:LPI vitamin C (VC) symposium speaker Anitra Carr, takes 500mg VC twice a day (the optimum dosage my research discovered in 1994), for tremendous health benefits; erythritol, common ingredient in keto foods, is likely to increase risk of strokes etc; higher intake of total phytoestrogens and foods rich in these compounds was associated with lower risk of total and certain cause-specific mortality in generally healthy US adults; Although some of the data suggested beneficial effects of selenium supplementation on immune function, the overall picture appears to be inconsistent; combination of early Complementary Feeding (non-milk) and short Breast Feeding was associated with elevated child adiposity and cardiometabolic markers; Allium vegetable components have antibacterial, antioxidative, and immune modulation properties, thus potentially exhibiting antitumor effects; Maximal overweight, nonobese to obese, and stable obesity across adulthood, as well as an obese to nonobese pattern from middle to late adulthood, were associated with accelerated biological aging;  A diet with a high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was associated with a higher risk of mortality ; Consuming whole grains, rather than refined grains, can assist in preventing  coronary heart disease (CHD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause mortality; Incidence of obesity was stable over the first 13 y of the last 2 decades but increased by 18% in 2013–2017; Ageless Brain memory stumulating pills- 3 ingredients – GABA, limited evidence for any benefit, alpha-GPC, likely to be hazardous, Bacopa, appears useful for cognitive function at 150mg daily; High Protein Intake Associated With Sarcopenia  – [At GRG there has been some discussion whether this is correct

The present study revealed that a supervised physical exercise program at the community level has positive effects on the physical capacities of coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, and aerobic capacity, which are essential components for a better functional capacity at this stage of life, with improvements that encompassed the improved self-perception of their health status, a reduction of overweight and obesity. The reinforcement of these programs is recommended, consequently, promoting pre-sport games and sports championships among the elderly population, as a public health strategy; Sniffing out cancer- 93% success rate in its study using a combination of dogs, sensors, and AI software to detect and identify breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancer; ban treatments with glyoxylic acid, a common ingredient in hair-straightening product, causing pain, vomiting and acute kidney injury; a special video from Dr. Alexander Michels talking about Visions of Linus Pauling.

LONG NOTES:

Vitamin C symposium at LPI – colds, pneumonia, sepsis prevented, lung infection, COVID infection and death and lessened duration for those with highest levels of vitamin C – 500mg twice a day; “Take people in hospital vitamin C, not flowers”. The speaker at the symposium, Anitra Carr, admitted she takes 500mg twice a day.

Local paper reported on a Nature article that erythritol, common ingredient in keto foods, is likely to increase risk of strokes, obesity, and much more.  In general, sugar substitutes like diet sodas are shown frequently to be harmful for health and increase obesity.

Scientific study shows students high on marijuana have IQ 10 pts lower. Students using cell phones during class have IQ 20 points lower. Imagine raising the IQ of most of the students in a school by 20 points by simply enforcing a no cell phone during class rule.

AJCN: A higher intake of total phytoestrogens, including isoflavones, lignans, and coumarins, and foods rich in these compounds was associated with lower risk of total and certain cause-specific mortality in generally healthy US adults. These data suggest that these phytochemicals and their dietary sources may be integrated into an overall healthy diet to achieve a longer life span.

AJCN: Although some of the data suggested beneficial effects of selenium supplementation on immune function, the overall picture appears to be inconsistent and heterogeneous due to differences in trial duration and interventions, plus evidence of null and even detrimental effects. Overall, the evidence that we extracted from the literature in this systematic review does not support the need to supplement selenium beyond the recommended dietary intake to obtain beneficial effects on immune function.

AJCN: A combination of early Complementary Feeding (non-milk) and short Breast Feeding was associated with elevated child adiposity and cardiometabolic markers. Longer BF duration may protect against cardiometabolic risk associated with early CF.

AJCN: Allium vegetable components have antibacterial, antioxidative, and immune modulation properties, thus potentially exhibiting antitumor effects. We found a significant reduction in the risk of developing Gastric Cancer with increasing dietary intake of allium vegetables, particularly garlic vegetables.

AJCN Maximal overweight, nonobese to obese, and stable obesity across adulthood, as well as an obese to nonobese pattern from middle to late adulthood, were associated with accelerated biological aging. In contrast, weight loss from young to middle adulthood was associated with decelerated biological aging. The findings highlight the potential role of weight management across adulthood for aging. Monitoring weight fluctuation may help identify the population at high risk of accelerated aging.

AJCN: A diet with a high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was associated with a higher risk of mortality in a diverse multinational study. Globally, limiting the consumption of UPFs should be encouraged.

AJCN: Consuming whole grains, rather than refined grains, can assist in preventing  coronary heart disease (CHD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause mortality.

AJCN: Incidence of obesity was stable over the first 13 y of the last 2 decades but increased by 18% in 2013–2017. Blacks and younger adults were at highest risk, and those with overweight were also at high risk for developing obesity.

Reader question: Is it worth taking Ageless Brain memory stumulating pills? Roc comments with more on my website: 3 ingredients – GABA, limited evidence for any benefit, alpha-GPC, likely to be hazardous, Bacopa, appears useful for cognitive function at 150mg daily

High Protein Intake Associated With Sarcopenia  – [At GRG there has been some discussion whether this is correct.] Previous research into the relationship between protein consumption and sarcopenia has noted the phenomenon of anabolic resistance, in which muscle protein is more difficult to synthesize in older adults [2]. Therefore, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) recommends that older adults consume 1 to 1.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day [3]. While this study was biased towards healthy volunteers, it offers highly contrary evidence to the conventional wisdom surrounding protein and sarcopenia, and it may result in re-evaluations of ESPEN and other dietary health guidelines. This is an association study that does not prove causation, but it makes it clear that simply eating more protein is not likely to protect anyone against developing sarcopenia. Exercise may be somewhat effective in fighting back against this disease, but more fundamental biological interventions are likely to be required to prevent it for good.

The reinforcement of these programs is recommended, consequently, promoting pre-sport games and sports championships among the elderly population, as a public health strategy.

Sniffing out cancer. Israel’s SpotitEarly (see here previously) has just reported a 93% success rate in its study using a combination of dogs, sensors, and AI software to detect and identify breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancer.

Preventing kidney failure. Israel is the first country in the world to ban treatments with glyoxylic acid, a common ingredient in hair-straightening products. Scientists at Israel’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center showed that the chemical is absorbed by the skin, often causing pain, vomiting and acute kidney injury.

Linus Pauling Day is almost here. Below is a special video from Dr. Alexander Michels talking about his interview with Chris Petersen. Chris recently published a book Visions of Linus Pauling
