AARP-What causes wrinkles: Repetitive muscle movements, smoking and too much sun are leading causes of wrinkles.  Wrinkles occur in the dermis, or the middle layer, of your skin. This layer is made up of elastin and collagen fibers. As we age, these fibers loosen — creating those pesky lines, folds and creases — and our skin can’t hold as much moisture, which leads to wrinkles, too.   wearing sunscreen daily and using moisturizing creams that have vitamin C and retinol, derived from vitamin A, to build up collagen.  The best thing to protect your skin is to wear a hat.

AARP-Fighting inflammation – Got pineapple juice? Then you have Bromelain that packs anti-inflammatory powers and supports your immune system.  Capsaicin stops a group of proteins that control your body’s response to inflammation.  If you have rheumatoid arthritis, ask your doctor if cat’s claw might help. A small study found people who took this supplement with standard RA treatments had less joint swelling and pain.  Curcumin is found in turmeric and gives the spice its yellow hue. This traditional Indian medicinal herb is known for its natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  Packed with antioxidants, vitamin E boosts your immune system and may also ease inflammation.  . Garlic slows down two inflammatory enzymes and clears the way for blood to get to your muscles. Add 2-4 fresh garlic cloves to your meals to fight swelling and pack flavor. Research shows ginger has anti-inflammatory powers similar to ibuprofen. One study found ginger extract tamed swelling in rheumatoid arthritis as well as steroids.  Omega-3 Fatty Acids! Some research suggests resveratrol may help with arthritis.   Studies show SAMe might control inflammation and may work as well as mainstream treatments for osteoarthritis.  Your whole body needs zinc, which can help ward off inflammation. You might already get enough zinc in your diet. Vitamin A boosts your immune system and guards against infectious diseases. Taking 10,000 international units (IU) for 1-2 weeks may help you heal after an exercise-related injury.

AARP – Alcohol restraint – If you drink it in moderation (about one glass a day), some studies show that it might be good for your heart.  moderation is key. People older than 65 who don’t take any medications should average no more than one drink a day (seven per week) and have no more than three at one sitting.  But too much can lead to an abnormal heartbeat and high blood pressure. As you get older, you have less water in your body and — for reasons that aren’t quite clear –you also feel thirsty less often. That makes seniors more likely to be dehydrated. Drinking alcohol can pull more water out of your body and make your chances of dehydration even higher.   it dries out your skin. even moderate drinking can lead to problems like fatty liver disease. It also can make it harder for your kidneys to do their thing. Heavy drinking over a long time can shrink brain cells and lead to alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD) and certain types of dementia.  It Can Weaken Your Immune System.  our bodies gain fat and lose muscle in our senior years and it takes longer for us to break down alcohol. drinking alcohol when you take aspirin can raise your chances of stomach problems or internal bleeding. Mixing it with certain sleeping pills, pain medications, or anxiety drugs can be life-threatening. alcohol can actually keep you from getting to sleep and lead to restless slumber.

AARP Worst Foods for High Triglycerides- Limit how much you eat of those that are starchy, like corn and peas. Use olive oil as a replacement for butter and margarine. Beans have fiber and other nutrients going for them. But if they’re made with sugar or pork, they may not be the best choice.  limit yourself to 2-3 pieces of fruit a day. sugars that are naturally part of alcohol.  Your doctor may recommend that you not drink at all if your triglyceride levels are very high. You’re better off buying canned fish that’s packed in water. coconut has health benefits, but it’s also high in saturated fats. Eat too much pasta, potatoes, or cereals and your body can turn them into triglycerides. cut down on sugary sweeteners across the board. That includes the saturated fat in the butter that’s baked into pastries. avoid all processed meats, including bacon, sausage, and ham.
