SUBJECT: Roc’s reading Sept 2014

Hot view 1) A fabulous diet plate from LPI (about LPI)- A picture worth many years of health – note recommended green tea and supplements; and banned foods

Hot view 2) Young blood holds protein that is rejuvenating factor – “It’s obvious…that something in the blood can potentially reverse aging… But  the work needs to be reproduced and might cause cancer.” – page 1234 Science Vol 345

ALSO: 3) Prescription for Obesity: Eat Less and Move More. Is It Really That Simple? “Obesity is a disease.” This is the declaration by the American Medical Association in June, 2013.

4) EGCG, the most significant polyphenol in green tea, has shown numerous health promoting effects….. acting through different pathways, as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic agent, showing gene expression activity, functioning through growth factor-mediated pathways, the mitogen-activated protein kinase-dependent pathway, the ubiquitin/proteasome degradation pathway, as well as eliciting an amyloid protein remodeling activity.

5) Good video on dealing with stress

6) Dairy proteins improve appendicular skeletal muscle mass and physical performance and attenuate the loss of muscle strength in older men and women subjects in a single blind randomized clinical trial – article

7) Osteobiflex – a reader inquired about osteobiflex, which she said was prescribed by a doctor at the Mayo Clinic – Roc comments: This product seems like something I would discuss with my doctor and then be willing to try for arthritis pain.

8) Newborn microbiome critical to immune function – Diet influences microbes in the intestine, and for the immune system to develop normally, microbes must colonize the gut. Ardeshir et al.demonstrate that breast-fed and bottle-fed infant macaques develop dramatically different immune systems, which remain different for at least six months after they begin receiving identical diets. These findings may explain the variation in people’s susceptibility to conditions involving the immune system, as well as the variation in how well the immune system protects people against certain infectious diseases. 10) A sweet decline for the aging fly brain – Along with other components, glycogen forms aggregates in the brains of aging mice, humans, and flies that correlate with a decline in neuron function. Science 345:783 (15 August 2014)

11) Mangosteen – A reader asked about mangosteen. Here’s what I found. Science in liquid dietary supplement promotion: the misleading case of mangosteenjuice.  The reviewer found that analyzed marketing claims overstate the significance of findings, and fail to disclose severe methodological weaknesses of the research they cite. If this trend extends to other related products that are similarly widely consumed, it may pose a public health threat .
