AJCN July, 2010 -DETAILS
1. Resveratrol exerts a plethora of activities preventing chronic illness – Link to where to obtain legitimate resveratrol. Red wine gained considerable interest when it was postulated to confer protective effects against cardiovascular diseases—the so-called French paradox. The subsequent discovery that resveratrol was found in red wine led to an exponential growth of publications on the cardioprotective effects of resveratrol. Since then, increasing evidence indicates that resveratrol exerts a plethora of biological activities against chronic illnesses, including cancer, neurodegeneration, type 2 diabetes, and ischemic injuries (1). Resveratrol has a myriad of targets and physiologic effects, in particular in the cardiovascular system…In this issue of the Journal, Fischer-Posovszky et al (9) and Hamed et al (10) have contributed further to our knowledge on the therapeutic effects of resveratrol (and thereby red wine) against both obesity-associated comorbidities and cardiovascular disease using both in vitro and in vivo. Abstract on reserveratrol
2. Eating red meat, pork and potatoes increases heart disease – Understand why the No Fours Diet reduces risk and effects of chronic illness.
3. 2g/d of phytosterols likely to be better than statins – Phytosterols are generally recommended in doses of 2 g/d (1). These sterols or their fatty acid esters have long been known to lower total and LDL cholesterol (2). This raises the question of whether dietary phytosterols, “natural” products, should be used rather than larger doses of statins or other drugs. Phytosterols produce their effects on LDL cholesterol by inhibiting the intestinal absorption of cholesterol. Abstract on sterols
4. Pasture-fed beef safe due to CLAs, grain fed is hazardous – Dairy products are the main source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; 18:2n–7t), which is produced by the ruminal biohydrogenation of grasses eaten by cows. Pasture-grazing dairy cows have more CLA in their milk than do grain-fed cows. Conclusion: 9c,11t-CLA, which is present in meaningful amounts in the milk of pasture-grazed cows, might offset the adverse effect of the saturated fat content of dairy products.
5. About 40% of people have blood pressure that is salt sensitive – Salt sensitivity of blood pressure is strongly associated with insulin resistance in lean, essential hypertensive patients.
6. Premenopausal women with iron-deficient anemia, but not those with only iron deficiency, benefit from iron supplements – Twice-daily consumption of an iron-fortified food product improved iron status in iron-deficient anemic soldiers but not in iron-normal or iron-deficient nonanemic soldiers.
7. Vitamin E supplement reduces respiratory infection in the elderly – Vitamin E supplementation may be a potential strategy to prevent respiratory tract infections (RIs) in the elderly.
8. DHA intake during pregnancy goes mainly to the fetus – We found a significantly higher ratio of 13C-DHA concentrations in cord plasma than in maternal plasma.
9. Milk fat and cheese intake lowers risk of first heart attack, esp. in women – Milk fat biomarkers were associated with a lower risk of developing a first MI, especially in women. This was partly confirmed in analysis of fermented milk and cheese intake.
10. Systematic review of organic food consumption claims no benefit – From a total of 98,727 articles, we identified 12 relevant studies…From a systematic review of the currently available published literature, evidence is lacking for nutrition-related health effects that result from the consumption of organically produced foodstuffs.
