LONG NOTES:
Most drugs work in just 30-50% of patients. Atrial fibrillation causes strokes in 100,000 people annually in Britain, and deaths can be prevented with an Apple Watch. A diabetes-control app can reduce diabetes annual care costs $1,400-$5,000/year – The Economist, May 7, 2022
Vitamin C is widely known as a powerful antioxidant as well as an effective cell protector and immunity booster. But supplements of Vitamin C have recently been recognized as having an important role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis because of its ability to increase bone density. I observed this noting that bears maintain strong bones while hibernating when they have high levels of vitamin C to protect their brains from reperfusion. Role of Vitamin C in Osteoporosis Development and Treatment—A Literature Review
Calorie restriction (CR) if planned properly with regular exercise at different ages can result in healthy weight loss. CR can also have different beneficial effects on improving lifespan and decreasing the age-associated diseases by regulating physiological, biochemical, and molecular markers. The different pathways regulated by CR include:(1) AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which involves PGC-1α, SIRT1, and SIRT3.
Inhalable telomerase gene therapy worked in mice. the mouse lifespan was increased up to 41% without an increased risk of cancer. The impact of this research on an aging population cannot be understated as the global aging-related noncommunicable disease burden quickly rises.
WebMD: signs of chronic inflammation: trouble balancing, insulin resistance, weak muscles, diarrhea, lower back pain, fatigue, arteriosclerosis, blood clotting, dry eye, memory/thinking issues
Genistein is a possible treatment for age-related diseases. Genistein has a multimodal mechanism of action. it acts as a cancer protective agent, promoting apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, and inhibiting angiogenesis and metastasis, but it also acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloid-β and autophagy promoter.
AARP: 8 things to raise blood pressure-sleep apnea, air pollution, black licorice, alcohol, Tylenol, added sugar, smoking.
Niacin as an anti-aging and life-extension drug. Niacin raises levels of HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL levels; meta-analyses have found that it significantly lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, by about 25%. The lipid-lowering action of niacin leads directly to another of its effects, an increase in autophagy. Since autophagy declines with age, and animals that have been genetically engineered to have higher levels of autophagy live longer, niacin and nicotinamide have the potential to slow aging and prolong lifespan.
Resveratrol, Niacin, Nicotinamide Riboside: Key Players in Activating Sirtuins to Mimic Calorie Restriction & Extend Lifespan. For instance, although resveratrol’s beneficial effects are primarily mediated through its activation of SIRT1, resveratrol’s cellular targets also include a number of other important regulatory enzymes including cyclooxygenases, lipooxygenases, kinases, ribonucleotide reductase, adenylyl cyclase, aromatase and DNA polymerases. The potential impact on healthspan of resveratrol’s modulation of the activity of these extra-sirtuin targets is outlined.
Gene in “junk” DNA protects against ALS. The gene IL18RAP can contain mutations that reduce inflammation in the brain. AND the dendrites in the brain’s neurons appear to be the learning center of the brain, rather than currently regarded synapses. It could help develop new types of treatments for degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
AARP Warning signs of Parkinsons-restless sleep, loss of smell, constipation, anxiety/depression, soft voice, stiffening face, gait troubles, tremors.
WebMD-body aging faster than it should-walking slowly, trouble with stairs, irregular sunspots, memory troubles before age 65, dry itchy skin, easy bruising, waist over 35 inches, sudden drop in grip strength,
