LONG NOTES:

Econonist Dec 20 pg 68-Dogs have been with humans for over 20,000 years.Dog owners have microbiomes very different than non-owners. Microbes in the microbiomes of dog owners made them calmer and more sociable. They had reduced aggression, less delinquent behavior, and less social withdrawal.  Pg 69 – Fructose is much sweeter, and does not cause the blood spikes that glucose does.  Avoid drinking your sugar, e.g. soda pop, as you consume much more.  A glass of orange juice has as much as an equal glass of coca-cola.  Chewing slows down the speed at which sugar reaches the stomach. All sugars are equally harmful.

Economst Jan 3 – Best way to train for a marathon! 3 factors-lactate threshold, when lactate builds up faster than it is cleared away. VO2 Max, the rate you can use oxygen, and how much energy you burn per mile.  You can train to optimize the first two. The third depends on body shape and technique. Those who ran the most during training did best. Low intensity training is best, to avoid injuries. Cut training distance 3 weeks before the event helps, rather than just 1.  Carboloading the final 48 hours helps a lot. 8-10g/kg body weight.

Dietary Fat Intake and Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: A Meta-Analysis of Cohort Studies by Yue Ruan et al. Meta-Analysis Curr. Alzheimer Res., 2018;15(9):869-876.  “Conclusions: This meta-analysis provides significant evidence of positive association between higher saturated fat intake and AD and dementia risk.”

“Holloway et al. found that HFD administration (nearly 75% of energy) for five days is sufficient to induce depression and impair retrieval speed and attention.

“Among the different types of vegetables, the green leafy variety has been identified as having the strongest protective effects against cognitive decline.

“High-quality diets that are associated with better cognitive function and lower dementia risk with aging are high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and fish and low in red meat, high-fat dairy products, sweets, and highly processed foods.”

“Dr Katz goes on to say that Perlmutter’s “book is filled with a whole bunch of nonsense, that’s why it’s a bestseller. …That’s how you get on the bestseller list. You promise the moon and stars, you say everything you heard before was wrong, and you blame everything on one thing. You get a scapegoat; it’s classic. Atkins made a fortune with that formula.
