LONG NOTES:
Ultra-processed food (UPF) is linked to harm in every major organ system of the human body and poses a seismic threat to global health, according to the world’s largest review.
UPF is also rapidly displacing fresh food in the diets of children and adults on every continent, and is associated with an increased risk of a dozen health conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression.
The sharp rise in UPF intake worldwide is being spurred by profit-driven corporations using a range of aggressive tactics to drive consumption, skewer scientific debate and prevent regulation, the review of evidence suggests.
The findings, from a series of three papers published in the Lancet, come as millions of people increasingly consume UPF such as ready meals, cereals, protein bars, fizzy drinks and fast food.
Scientists discover first gene proven to directly cause mental illness. Scientists have discovered that a single gene, GRIN2A, can directly cause mental illness—something previously thought to stem only from many genes acting together. People with certain variants of this gene often develop psychiatric symptoms much earlier than expected, sometimes in childhood instead of adulthood.

Orange juice found to affect thousands of genes in immune cells, study says. A significant number of these genes are involved in mechanisms that regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation and control sugar metabolism. These are critical processes for long-term cardiovascular health.

Joint liver disease treatment with Germany. Researchers at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University are working on Project HepaModulatoR with the University of Tübingen, Germany to correct damaged RNA causing chronic liver diseases. They have been awarded a multi-million Euro grant from the European Research Council.

A protein to treat brain injury. (TY Atid-EDI) ProSpecBio has launched its latest product: CHO cell–derived recombinant Activin-A, now available for immediate delivery worldwide. Activin-A is increasingly recognized as a potential therapeutic agent for conditions such as brain injury and inflammatory diseases.

Play video games with your brain. (TY WIN & I24News) A new video featuring Israel’s i-BrainTech (see here previously) showing how their system allows athletes to focus their minds to improve their physical skills.

Astragaloside IV Alleviates Osteoarthritis by Inhibiting Chondrocyte Ferroptosis via the p53/SLC7A11/GPX4 Axis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by articular cartilage damage. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV), a cyclic triterpenoid saponin extracted from Astragalus membranaceus, exhibits antioxidant and cartilage-protective activities.

The Complex Interplay Between Sleep and Healthy Aging: A Scoping Review
The relationship between sleep and healthy aging is complex, involving changes in sleep patterns, architecture, and disturbances. Recognizing these changes is crucial for maintaining physical, cognitive, social, and psychological well-being in older adults. Discrepancies between subjective and objective sleep assessments emerged, indicating that older adults may underreport sleep disturbances.

Research reveals “compelling” new drug target for Parkinson’s. Researchers have identified a key enzyme driving forms of Parkinson’s, offering a promising new drug target for the condition.

From a reader: Taxifolin/biodihydroquercetin is an antioxidant to detox alcohol from liver. Please find info as taxifolin is anti cancer.

Comparative Effects of Minodronate and Alendronate on Low Back Pain in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis and Age Influence: A Head-to-Head, Randomized Clinical Trial. Both bisphosphonates demonstrated equivalent analgesic efficacy and comparable bone mineral density and biochemical effects, with age-independent responses. Safety profiles were similar, supporting clinical selection based on dosing convenience and gastrointestinal tolerance.

Regenerative Orthopedics, including PRP and/or Prolotherapy injections, have long been shown to be highly effective treatments for ligament and tendon injuries. In a recent study, “It was observed that dextrose prolotherapy injections were effective in reducing pain and improving functionality in the treatment of distal semimembranous tendinopathy. (2)
Regenerative Orthopedics, along with vastus medialis strengthening, will relieve the pain and speed up the process of normalizing the patellar tracking in Runner’s Knee. The treatment allows for a quick return to activities without the need for surgery.
Regenerative Orthopedics for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome-Runner’s knee: Another recent study documented the effectiveness of both Prolotherapy and PRP in the treatment of these knee conditions, stating: “The current literature indicates that Prolotherapy and PRP are safe interventions with therapeutic potential for patients with chondromalacia patellae, patellofemoral arthritis, and anterior knee pain.”(3)

From Kevin Fickenscher: Real Research On Keeping Dementia At Bay (But I recommend Lithium Orotate) – A new study reported by Mass General Brigham hospital researchers has shown that walking as little as 3,000 steps a day may slow the onset and progression of dementia among the old folks – people like me . They kept track of almost 300 subjects ages 50 – 90 who did not exhibit any cognitive problems at the start of the study. Pedometers were used to track the daily walking schedules of the participants, along with regular visits and a PET scan to track any substantive changes in the brain. What was interesting was that the more steps one walked regularly, the longer the delay in the onset of any symptoms of dementia. 3,000 steps kept dementia at bay for 3+ years, while 5,000 to 7,000 steps delayed the onset to about seven years.

From Kevin Fickenscher: Congrats to all of those who’ve lost weight over the last several years!!! According to the USA Centers for Disease Control, obesity in 2013 was 37.2% of the population. It had been creeping up in the prior decades. It reached a high of 41.9% of the population in 2020 during the pandemic. And, now it’s back down to about 40.3% So, what brought it down? Clearly, moving out of the pandemic era would help since many of us were not engaging in communal activities and eating a bit more (😊) as we munched on all manner of goodies in the comfort of our homes. But, some project that the cause is intake of the GLP-1 weight-loss drugs
