SUBJ: 2 million emergency room visits were caused by dental problems
SUBtitle: As your teeth and gums go, so does the rest of your body
Fish and visitors stink after three days -Poor Richard’s Almanac
Have you heard the one about the first Jewish person to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth? She was officially bestowing knighthood on a group of people and when it came time to knight the future Sir Steinberg, he was the only one who didn’t kneel, as per his religious convictions. The puzzled Queen turned to her escort and said, “Why is this knight different from all the other knights?”

LONG NOTES:
New Yorker Aug 4, pg 42- The American Dental Association estimates and the ones we need most are the ones we cannot afford. In 2019, close to 2 million emergency room visits were caused by dental problems, oral cancers alone-often detected too late – kill some 12 thousand Americans a year. Whether by cause or effect, Peter Ungar noites in “Evolution’s Bite,” poor oral health has been linked to Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, osteoporosis, premature births, sepsis, and a host of other conditions. “As your teeth and gums go, so does the rest of your body,” he writes.
AARP: A healthy diet and exercise are your best bet for muscle health, which can improve physical function and mobility while preventing frailty and falls. For protein: milk, chicken, tofu, beans, salmon, eggs, (not protein but good) sweet potato, red bell pepper.
NPR – Superagers get plenty of sleep, have good social connections, get exercise. Aging is only slightly influenced by genetic heritage.
Science 31 July pg 440-Genome study makes a quantum leap in understanding stuttering. 57 unreported DNA regions found suggest links between stuttering, autism, and depression. This may help develop medications. 1% of people stutter, appearing usually in childhood. Pg. 457- Aging is driven by several concurrent biological processes. These hallmarks of aging are evolutionarily well conserved. Disruption of proteostasis is key (Mito-C), alohng with genome instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, and epigenetic alterations. During aging, brain proteins enriched in basic amino acids decrease. So brain proteins suffer during aging. Pg. 472- Aggregation of misfolded proteins (Mito-C) in a key pathological feature of Parkinson’s disease. The dysfuntion of the glymphatic system that cleans the brain misfunctions.

Breakthrough lung cancer treatment supercharges immune cells with mitochondria. Scientists have found a way to supercharge lung cancer treatment by transplanting healthy mitochondria into tumors, which both boosts immune response and makes chemotherapy far more effective. A key cause of aging is failing mitochondria so we do not produce enough energy. Mutant mitochondria are a leading cause of cancer.
The safe and cheap anti-diabetes drug metformin has been in use for decades. In addition to its strong glucose-lowering activity, metformin also exerts metabolic effects that lead to weight loss, improved lipid profile, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. Metformin is also one of the most famous small molecules in the longevity field. It has demonstrated healthspan benefits and, in some experiments, lifespan extension, in animal models, and it has been linked to improved health outcomes and survival in diabetic humans. Despite metformin being around for so long, scientists were still not entirely sure what its mechanism of action is. It was thought that it works via peripheral organs, such as the liver and the gut. However, in this new study from the Baylor College of Medicine, published in Science Advances, researchers have found that metformin’s activity might be mediated by the brain. “The brain is now widely recognized as a key regulator of whole-body glucose metabolism and a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes.”
Bone loss often occurs before Alzheimer’s is diagnosed in people, and Alzheimer’s model mice have significant bone loss. This bone loss is accompanied by amyloid accumulation in bone tissue. These amyloids are often found alongside fat deposits in bone, which contain senescent cells that secrete a SASP factor that encourages the amyloids to aggregate. Interrupting this process ameliorates amyloid-related osteoporosis in mice.
A member of the Hallmarks of Aging, the loss of proteostasis is a crucial factor underlying many of the pathological manifestations of aging, particularly neurodegenerative diseases. Recent research has shown that interventions to restore proteostasis, such as through pharmacological agents, genetic modifications, and lifestyle changes, can ameliorate this age-related damage and extend healthy lifespan. As organisms age, the mechanisms that ensure proteostasis gradually lose efficiency. This breakdown contributes to the accumulation of damaged or misfolded proteins, a phenomenon observed in several age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s diseases.
“It is a warning that middle-aged people have long offered the young:
ageing is not a smooth process. Now, an exhaustive analysis of how
proteins change over time in different organs backs up that idea,
finding that people experience an inflection point at around 50 years
old, after which ageing seems to accelerate.
“Instead of strengthening the safety net, the bill makes care harder to access for the very people who need it most—low-income families, seniors, and rural residents.”

Kevin Fickenscher monitors the literature for all of the health benefits I can identify through coffee consumption. In addition to the clear pick-me-up capabilities derived from a cup-a-joe, research is continuing to identify longer-term health benefits. Some of the best are its effect on Type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and a decreased risk of cancer. Even death reduction has been noted in some studies. But, there are some downsides. Evidently, dementia and stroke and acute death from cardiovascular disease among coffee drinkers with hypertension is a problem. But, even with those caveats, the data base is fairly clear that moderate coffee consumption is beneficial.
A steady increase in acquisitions along with an associated increase in the price of services. Specifically, the percentage of physician employed by hospital systems has increased from 27.5% (2008) to 47.2% (2016) – and, most likely, has gone beyond that mark during the ensuing years.
Researchers at UC San Francisco and the Gladstone Institutes recently announced that initial research on mice has shown that two FDA-approved drugs used in cancer treatment appears to also treat Alzheimer’s! The first is irinotecan used for colon and lung cancers and the second is letrozole.
Long story short, the pandemic brains aged about 5.5 months faster through the loss of both white (neurotransmission) and gray (memory, emotions, movement) matter compared to the non-pandemic brain scans. Other prior studies have shown that as a result of the pandemic brain damage has been documented in those who experience various forms of dementia. Furthermore, the decline was more evident in the elderly and those with lower education status and income.
