LONG NOTES:

Single-item substitutions can substantially reduce the carbon and water scarcity footprints of US diets.

I was just in India for more than a month, and I met this 102 year old man (resident of the same community)  on my daily walk — he was sprightly, alert, ramrod straight back and walking and talking without a care in the world–I asked him for his secret and he said 1) Keep moving,2) Eat what you need and not just to eat, 3) Attitude, forget yesterday (cannot change), tomorrow (cannot predict), but you have full control over NOW and can act with purpose and positivity  rather than react to everything. This was a great guy to see every day on my walk–around sunset he would be perched on  a brick wall contemplating and watching the sun go down…

Science 14 Jan 22 – Atherosclerosis is produced from oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) cholesterol.  That oxidation is caused by free radicals and can be prevented by taking enough vitamin C.  This two-hit NLRP3 activation leads to interleukin production and exacerbation of atherosclerosis.

The aim of the current review was to explore the association between various dietary antioxidants and the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD).   This is the first study to assess whether there is a dose-response relationship between the amount of consumed dietary antioxidants and the risk of PD The pooled RR was significantly lower for the highest compared to the lowest intake categories of vitamin E and anthocyanins in cohort studies. Conversely, a significantly higher risk of PD was observed for higher lutein intake (1.86) among case-control studies. Dose-response meta-analyses indicated a significant association between a 50 mg/d increase in vitamin C (RR: 0.94), a 5 mg/d increment in vitamin E (RR: 0.84), a 2 mg/d increment in β-Carotene (RR: 0.94), and a 1 mg/d increment in zinc (OR: 0.65) and the reduced risk of PD. Overall, higher intake of antioxidant-rich foods may be associated with a lower risk of PD.

[Note this antioxidant regimen can be achieved taking AREDsII and Mito-C daily]

Association of waist-calf circumference ratio with incident cognitive impairment in older adults. High  waist circumference, and low calf circumference were significantly associated with higher incident cognitive impairment in older adults. Moreover, waist-calf circumference ratio had a relatively stronger association with cognitive impairment compared with each circumference, suggesting maintaining both higher lean mass and lower central fat in older adults for the prevention of cognitive impairment.

Diet can slow brain aging. A green Mediterranean diet, high in polyphenols and low in red and processed meat, seems to slow age-related brain atrophy. Ben Gurion University researchers led an 18-month international randomized control trial on 300 participants – one of the world’s longest and largest brain MRI trials.

Nutrition-related claims lead parents to choose less healthy drinks for young children: a randomized trial in a virtual convenience store Nutrition-related claims led parents to choose less healthy beverages for their children and misled them about the healthfulness of fruit drinks. Labeling regulations could mitigate misleading marketing of fruit drinks

Late‐life exercise mitigates skeletal muscle epigenetic aging.  These data provide a molecular basis for exercise as a therapy to attenuate skeletal muscle aging. The epigenetic age of muscle from old mice that PoWeR-trained for eight weeks was approximately eight weeks younger than 24-month-old sedentary counterparts.

Note from the abstract that “oleuropein (OLP), an olive-derived polyphenol, also displayed” “epigenetic modulation and antiaging effects“, particularly effecting “KLOTHO recovery”.

Lupus treatment is right on target. Current treatments for lupus nephritis shut down much of the immune system, with many adverse side effects. A new therapy developed by researchers, including Israel’s Professor Chaim Putterman, targets only the relevant T-cells and is therefore much safer.

DNA mutations are not random as previously thought.  Findings change our understanding of evolution. In contrast to expectations, we find that mutations occur less often in functionally constrained regions of the genome—mutation frequency is reduced by half inside gene bodies and by two-thirds in essential genes.

AARP: worst joint habits- About 50 percent of adults over age 65 have arthritis from: smoking, being sedentary, too much exercise, carrying heavy loads, eating  red meat, white sugar, French fries, soda, pastries, texting too much

AARP: foods to help lose weight: baked potatoes, pasta, nuts, cheese, coffee, rice, dark chocolate, popcorn, whole milk,

We suggest that the prerequisite for a rejuvenation intervention is a robust, sustained, and systemic reduction in biological age, which can be assessed by biomarkers of aging, such as epigenetic clocks.

Science 14 Jan 22 pg 134 – First cloned animal to help save an endangered species. DNA from a black-footed ferret was used to produce a live healthy ferret whose species was nearly extinct.
