LONG NOTES
AARP Jan/Feb 2025-They project a shortage of 2,000 doctors by 2037. Alcohol deaths rise in older Americans 39.3 deaths per 100,000 in 55-64 year olds. SPRING COVID BOOSTER advised for adults age 65+. Boost your immune system: physical activity, vaccines, avoid touching your face, wash your hands. Some medications surpress your immune system: steroids. Chronic pain surges in people 65+. 13.5% report high impact pain that can cause anxiety and depression, up from 7.4% in 2019.. 36% experience chronic pain. 70 million Americans are on Medicare. What to do? Read my nutrition newsletter faithfully and follow the guidance there and at my website, WHY WE AGE AND HOW TO PROLONG HEALTHSPAN. I am working on a research poster that I intend to present at the Linus Pauling Meetings in Oregon in September. Please consider subscribing to my newsletter to defray my $5,000 expense to write the poster and publish an article about how to age successfully.

A note to my over-60 friends recently: I just began drinking 20g of protein every morning. It is to delay sarcopenia, muscle wasting with age. I got a plastic can of powdered plant protein at the grocery store. Just mix up two scoopfuls of water and chug it down. I also eat some fiber – granola usually – as the microbiome loses important types of bacteria if it does not get enough fiber every day.
Milk fat is good for you. Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Israel’s Agriculture Research Organization have discovered that the fat globules in milk deliver beneficial pro-biotic bacteria and prevent the formation of harmful bacteria. The finding can lead to better infant milk and healthy milk products.
Science 10 Jan pg 122-Fish could personalize cancer treatments. They inject fish with your cancer cells and test treatments to kill those particular cells. Pg 127-How a neurotransmitter drives brainwashing during sleep. The sleep drug Ambien impedes blood vessel oscillations which hampers cleaning the brain during sleep.
Association between oral microbiome diversity and all-cause mortality: a longitudinal study of NHANES, 2009–2012. “Compared with the lowest quartile of oraL microbiome diversity, the risk for all-cause mortality was reduced by nearly 50% in the highest quartile.”
How bacteria resistance can be neutralized. A study by Tel Aviv University reveals how plasmids – small circular DNA fragments – neutralize bacterial defense mechanisms. It opens a door to combating antibiotic resistance. Plasmids could also break down pollutants, fix carbon dioxide, and improve gut bacteria.
HBOT for PTSD. At the Shamir Medical Center, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) – breathing pure oxygen in pressurized chambers – is proving to be a game-changer for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) sufferers, with 70% reporting lasting relief. See here previously.
GRG: Life extensions interventions that may theoretically synergize with exercise and have been reported to reliably extend life span are fish oil and magnesium.
AARP: Warning Signs of Pancreatic Cancer and Advances in Treatment: Treatment is more likely to be effective the sooner the cancer is caught.

It’s [Sleep] like turning on the dishwasher before you go to bed and waking up with a clean brain” — Maiken Nedergaard. Reduced non-REM sleep has been linked to the risk of early Alzheimer’s disease. This appears to be bidirectional, setting up a vicious loop, since decreased sleep leads to more toxic proteins, and the toxic proteins interfere with sleep. Ambien, a benzodiazepine like Valium, and other sleep medications have been associated with a heightened risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in multiple studies.
Intervention for Social Frailty Focusing on Physical Activity and Reducing Loneliness: A Randomized Controlled Trial. The multi-component program aimed at promoting PA may contribute to the building of social relationships and reducing loneliness in older adults with social frailty and pre-frailty.
The Black Men’s Brain Health Conference is an annual event organized by a team of researchers studying Alzheimer’s and dementia, and is particularly focused on helping understand why Black men are more prone to Alzheimer’s disease.
