Steve Matheson’s top 5 supplement choices

Spermidine (I take this daily)

Ergothioneine – For this, I substitute AREDsII and (I forget which supplement I take is especially for mitochondria)

Urolithin-A (I take ellagic acid, which is the same)

Ca-alphaketoglutarate (I take alphaketoglutarate)

NMN – nicotinamide mononucleotide (I take niacin)

Spermidine 98% 25.0 mg
Ergothionene 99% 20.0 mg
Urolithin A 97% 500.0 mg
Ca-AKG 100% 800.0 mg
NMN 99.5% 800.0 mg

Spermidine can counteract the general age-related cycle by having a broad effect on cellular health and may have specific effects on various organ systems involved in, for example, cardiovascular function, immune responses to cancer or neurodegeneration, thereby reducing the incidence of age-related diseases.

Recent epidemiological findings suggest that an increased intake of spermidine in food also reduces overall cardiovascular and cancer-related fatalities in humans. Scientists T. Eisenberg and Madeo discovered that spermidine helps human immune cells survive longer. Spermidine protects against neuronal cell damage by inducing autophagy. This is thought to inhibit multiple neurological pathologies including neurodegeneration, memory loss, cognitive decline, and motor impairment in aging. Spermidine levels in the body were found to decrease as we age.

Ergothioneine (ET) is an amino acid that is found mainly in mushrooms, as well as red and black beans. It is also found in animals that have eaten grasses containing ergothioneine.

ET sets new benchmarks for antioxidant protection, cell health, mitochondrial function, energy output, and anti-aging benefits. In humans, ET is present in tears and aqueous humour, the fluid in the eye. Hence ET may help protect the eye against oxidative damage, whereas lower ET levels might predispose to ocular disorders. ET supplementation significantly improved time-to- exhaustion in mice. Ergothioneine also slightly improved early protein synthesis and did not impair mitochondrial recovery. Lower blood levels of ET are a risk factor for age-related disorders.

Urolithin-A does not exist in any food source. Your body makes it (we are a chemical factory after all) and the other 12 urolithins are made in the gut from compounds found in food. The. food compounds are called ellagic acids and ellagitannins.

As we age our digestive system also ages and becomes less efficient, making supplementation of Urolithin A beneficial for the aging population. People over 40 are in the “aging” group. “The decrease in circulating biomarkers in this trial supports the improved mitochondrial health in participants who used the urolithin A supplement.

Calcium-alpha-ketoglutarate is a special form of the mineral calcium that can be used to restore calcium concentration level in the blood back to normal. This form is more effective and highly bioavailable. Calcium-alpha-ketoglutarate binds excess phosphate and pass it as a waste, re- establishing normal balance of calcium and phosphate in the body.

In mice it promotes longer, healthier life associated with a decrease in levels of inflammatory cytokines. Inflammatory cytokines cause frailty. Strikingly, the reduction in frailty was more dramatic than the increase in lifespan.

Clinical trials done with humans helped in promoting muscle growth, wound healing, increasing energy levels, immunity, and fast recovery after surgery. Also responsible for the elimination of radical oxygen species and for keeping the skin hydrated. It also increases AMPK activity and inhibits mTOR.

NMN is a naturally occurring molecule that is classified as a bioactive nucleotide. It’s a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and a driving force in the body’s production of NAD+, which is an essential coenzyme involved in multiple biological processes including aging and gene expression.

NMN is clinically demonstrated to increase NAD+ and telomerase. NMN is proven to increase the length of telomeres. This can be measured with the Trudiagnosic test and other specific telomere tests. NAD+ restoration extends health span and lifespan and mitigates several conditions, such as premature ageing diseases and neurodegenerative diseases.
