SHORT NOTES: My latest essay is how men and women can effectively reduce hair loss! Supplementation with taurine slowed key markers of aging such as increased DNA damage, telomerase deficiency, impaired mitochondrial function, and cellular senescence;  Being bilingual reduces the risk of dementia; Maintaining high levels of vitamin C in the brain keeps the brain healthy, 500mg twice a day; Taurine lowers blood pressure; Activation of stress response pathways contributes to lifespan extension; risks for dementia- About a third of people 85 and older show signs of Alzheimers-things like diet, exercise, and your social life reduce your risk;  People under age 80 who reported feeling alone were twice as likely to have dementia.

LONG NOTES:

Thanks to the generosity of people volunteering to sponsor nutrition investigator by purchasing a subscription, I will be spending my summer vacation working on my website.  My latest essay is how men and women can effectively reduce hair loss!  Unlike all the deception in this area, here are two methods that are likely to work. See essay 4 how to slow getting bald.

Science 9 June pg 1028 – Taurine deficiency as a driver of aging! Supplementation with taurine slowed key markers of aging such as increased DNA damage, telomerase deficiency, impaired mitochondrial function, and cellular senescence. Loss of taurine in humans was associated with aging-related diseases, and concentrations of taurine and its metabolites increased in response to exercise. Taurine supplementation improved life span in mice and health span in monkeys; Pg 1025 – learn a new language ASAP! Being bilingual reduces the risk of dementia and improves cognitive performance. But after age 65 it does not help cognitively.  Learning early in life is key.

Maintaining high levels of vitamin C in the brain keeps the brain healthy.  [So my discovery of 500mg twice a day and my supplement Mito-C are vital to maintaining your brain.] Vascular aging is well known to be associated with the breakdown of the neurovascular unit (NVU), which is essential for maintaining brain homeostasis and linked to higher cognitive dysfunction. Oxidative stress is believed to be a significant cause of the vascular aging process. Vitamin C is easily oxidized under physiological conditions, so it loses its potent antioxidant activity. We developed a DNA aptamer that enhances the function of vitamin C.   Compared to young mice and NXP032-treated mice, 20-month-old mice displayed cognitive impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance tests. NXP032 treatment contributed to reducing the BBB damage by attenuating the fragmentation of microvessels and reducing PDGFR-β, ZO-1, and laminin expression, thereby mitigating astrocytes and microglia activation during normal aging.

Blood pressure (BP) tends to rise with chronological age. Taurine lowers it. 1) Taurine Supplementation Lowers Blood Pressure and Improves Vascular Function in  Prehypertension: Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study 2) The Effects of Oral Taurine on Resting Blood Pressure in Humans: a Meta-Analysis
GRG – Biological resilience and aging: Activation of stress response pathways contributes to lifespan extension.  The stress response system is essential to health, but that does not mean stress is good for our health.  The stress response corrects metabolic errors that occur when we are stressed, and helps diminish the tremendous damage caused by inflammation, which I consider the second major cause of aging.

But for a long healthspan, minimizing stress is essential.  That is why meditation, kindness, and exercise are a few keys to healthspan.

WebMD-risks for dementia- About a third of people 85 and older show signs of Alzheimers. The genes you get from your parents play a part at this age, but so do things like diet, exercise, your social life, and other illnesses. Dementia isn’t a normal part of getting older. Plaque in your arteries can cause a stroke and heart disease.  And many things that cause heart disease — tobacco use, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol — also can lead to dementia.  Air pollution increased risk 1.5x.  Diabetes. Poor sense of smell doubles risk.  High cholesterol. Herpes. Depression (use SAMe). French researchers found people who developed dementia often paired processed meats – i.e. ham, pepperoni, and deli meats – with high carbs like potatoes, alcohol, and baked sweets.  Repeated head injury.  People under age 80 who reported feeling alone were twice as likely to have dementia.  Obesity. If you wake up a lot or don’t sleep enough — you could be more likely to get dementia
