LONG NOTES:
JN: Serum 25(OH)D concentrations are inversely associated with respiratory infection occurrence among United States adults. This finding may shed light on the protective effect of vitamin D on respiratory health.
Economist-Better diet avoids red meat, ultra-processed foods like white bread and soda, staying thin. 58% of food Americans eat is ultra-processed, and 75% eat red meat daily.
JN: Plant-based diets (PBDs) have become very popular in recent years and have been identified as a dietary strategy associated with protection against chronic disease. The different types of plant-based diets (vegan, lacto-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or pescatarian) are discussed with a focus on specific effects of dietary components in maintaining a healthy weight, protecting against dyslipidemias, insulin resistance, hypertension, and low-grade inflammation.
JN: Egg consumption may play an important role in early-life growth given their high-quality protein, essential fatty acids, and micronutrients. Egg introduction during infancy among females is associated with lower total fat mass index in early adolescence and plasma adiponectin in early childhood. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02820402.
JN: . A narrative synthesis of quantitative data revealed that exposure to unhealthy foods and beverages, specifically NOVA-defined UltraProcessedFoods, in children of preschool age, may be associated with a worse blood lipid and blood pressure profile in later childhood
JN: Nutritional quality, and health and climate impacts are important considerations in the design of sustainable diets. The results among men suggest some adverse health effects for men when diet quality is not considered in the pursuit of more climate-sustainable diets. For women, no significant associations were detected.
JN: Obesity-Associated Dyslipidemia Is Moderated by Habitual Intake of Marine-Derived n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids. Intake of n-3 PUFAs may independently reduce dyslipidemia through the direct path resulting from excess adiposity
JN: Although controlled trials do not show a direct effect of ready-to-eat cereals (RTECs) consumption on body weight or body composition, the preponderance of observational data supports the inclusion of RTEC as part of a healthy dietary pattern for children and adolescents. Evidence also suggests similar benefits on body weight and body composition regardless of the sugar content.
AJCN: For breast cancer prevention, not all plant-based diets are created equal. a plant-based diet based on less healthy plant foods—sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juices, refined grains, and sweets—had the opposite association, with a 20% higher risk of the highest compared with lowest quintile.
AJCN: Tax on sugary drinks and trends in daily soda consumption by family affluence: an international repeated cross-sectional survey among European adolescents. Socioeconomic patterns did not change after the tax implementation in 3 out of 4 countries, and socioeconomic inequalities were reduced in France. Taxing sodas might be an effective measure to attenuate, or at least not exacerbate, socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent daily soda consumption.
JN: Replacing some animal sources of protein with plant foods is encouraged. Nutrient intake may reflect changes in the protein source. Replacing protein from animal sources with plant foods may result in lower intakes of protein and some nutrients but a better intake of dietary components associated with reducing chronic disease risk.
JN: Depression is a rapidly increasing public health concern, affecting >4% of the global population. Increased vitamin E intake (up to 15 mg/d) is associated with decreased depressive symptoms. (AREDsII is effective at delaying macular degeneration. It has plenty of vitamin E to meet this need and boost the effectiveness of vaccinations.)
