SUBJ: Melatonin intake reduced a blood marker of heart failure

SUBtitle: Another discovery why sleep is important

Lots of news again.I am upgrading my website so that it will have a keyword search so that you can search the entire site for a topic like fibromyalgia. Check out the early incomplete version here.

LONG NOTES:

A clinical trial found melatonin intake reduced a blood marker of heart failure and led to better quality of life, compared with a placebo, in patients diagnosed with stable heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Stable heart failure with reduced ejection fraction develops when the left ventricle of the heart fails to contract normally. The April 2022 issue of Clinical Cardiology reported the trial findings. Eighty-five patients diagnosed with stable heart failure with reduced ejection fraction received 10 milligrams of melatonin or a placebo nightly for 24 weeks.  Research suggests the decline in melatonin levels that occurs during aging contributes to insomnia and other aging-associated conditions.

Another discovery why sleep is important: Because myelin is continuously remodeled in the brain, good nighttime sleep characteristics appear to be important for its quality and maintenance. Nighttime Sleep Characteristics and White Matter Integrity in Young Adults

Total sample included 8,639 adults, 20 years of age and over. Lower Vitamin D status was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome

among U.S. adults after adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, dietary supplement use, and BMI. This finding was noted across all race and Hispanic origin groups, although the strength of the association varied being strongest for non-Hispanic White adults.

Antioxidants are key in reducing osteoarthritis, a possible new treatment. Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory and degenerative joint disease with severe effects on individuals, society, and the economy that affects millions of elderly people around the world. To date, there are no effective treatments for OA; however, there are some treatments that slow or prevent its progression. Polyfunctional nanosystems have many advantages, such as controlled release, targeted therapy and high loading rate, and have been widely used in OA treatment. Previous mechanistic studies have revealed that inflammation and ROS are interrelated, and a large number of studies have demonstrated that ROS play an important role in different types of OA development. In this review article, we summarize third-generation ROS-sensitive nanomaterials that scavenge excessive ROS from chondrocytes and osteoclasts in vivo.

The word “inflammation” traces back to the Latin for “set afire.” It’s part of your immune system’s natural response to heal an injury or fight an infection. Long-term, or “chronic,” inflammation is seen in many diseases and conditions. The types of food you eat affect how much inflammation you have. Get plenty of  fruits, vegetables, whole grains, plant-based proteins (like beans and nuts), fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, tuna, and sardines), and healthier oils, like olive oil. Also eat foods with probiotics, like yogurt.

Inflamed arteries are common among people with heart disease. Some researchers think that when fats build up in the walls of the heart’s coronary arteries, the body fires back with inflammatory chemicals, since it sees this as an “injury” to the heart. That could trigger a blood clot that causes a heart attack or stroke. Some experts say obesity triggers the inflammation, which makes it harder for the body to use insulin. Chronic brain inflammation is often seen in people with this type of dementia. Chronic inflammation is tied to ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which are types of inflammatory bowel disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is different. In RA, the immune system attacks your body’s joints, causing inflammation that can harm them. inflammation in fibromyalgiadoesn’t attack the joints. Recent research suggests, however, that brain inflammation may be associated with fibromyalgia. Even if you have a condition like RA, in which inflammation is a problem, exercise is still good for you.  Research shows that when healthy people are sleep-deprived, they have more inflammation. Lighting up is a sure-fire way to raise inflammation.

Ginger root has anti-inflammation perks. So do cinnamon, clove, black pepper, and turmeric (which gives curry powder its orange-yellow color). Many people take NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to tame inflammation and ease pain. they can cause stomach problems. The omega-3s in fish such as salmon and tuna can dial down inflammation. Fish oil can help, too.

The association between diabetes and dementia has been well demonstrated by epidemiologic studies. Berberine (BBR) has been reported to ameliorate diabetes and diabetic encephalopathy (DE). However, the mechanism is still unknown.  Taken together, the present results suggest that the SIRT1/ER stress pathway might be a crucial mechanism in the neuroprotective effect of BBR against DE.

TWO OPPOSITE RESULTS: This paper takes the view that much of aging is driven by systemic molecular excess. Signaling molecules, antibodies, and toxins, which gradually accumulate out of control, cause cells to exhibit the gene expression that characterizes older cells. Published in GeroScience, a groundbreaking study from the renowned Conboy lab has confirmed that plasma dilution leads to systemic rejuvenation against multiple proteomic aspects of aging in human beings.  OPPOSITE RESULT: Our previous study showed that an exchange of blood between heterochronic parabionts for 3 months did not rejuvenate the immune system of the old partners. Moreover, the young immune system became more aged and began to function according to the “old” principle.

Gout-4% of US has gout.  the most common form of inflammatory arthritis. To diagnose gout, a doctor will do bloodwork to check your uric acid levels or take a fluid sample from the painful joint and look for urate crystals. Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, giving up alcohol and switching to a healthy diet may help prevent gout attacks. Drinking low-fat milk and eating low-fat cheese can reduce uric acid levels. And your doctor may recommend avoiding beer, seafood, sugar-sweetened juices and red meat (especially organ meats) because they are high in purines, a chemical that can incite a flare.  For most patients, the best way to prevent future gout attacks is to take a uric-acid-lowering medication such as allopurinol or febuxostat, Singh says.

Best Ways to Take Different Vitamins Your body absorbs some of its vitamins better with food, so you may want to take it with a meal or a snack. You’ll absorb B12 better with a meal. If you also use vitamin C, put 2 hours between them. Vitamin C can keep your body from using B12. Vitamins A, D, E, and K need to go with fat from a meal for your body to absorb and use them. But you don’t need a lot of fat — or any saturated fat. You absorb iron best on an empty stomach. Large doses of minerals can compete with each other to be absorbed. Don’t use calcium, zinc, or magnesium supplements at the same time.  If you’re pregnant, vitamin A doses over 10,000 IU a day can cause birth defects. Extra folic acid and iron are very important for a healthy baby. They can be found in most prenatal vitamins. But some prenatal vitamins can make nausea worse, mostly because of the iron. If this happens to you, pair your prenatal vitamins with a light snack before you go to bed. If you take a traditional blood thinner like warfarin, just the small amount of vitamin K in an MVM can cut its strength. Taking more than 1,000 mg of vitamin E per day can raise your risk for bleeding. There’s no one standard MVM formula. Some have more nutrients than recommended. Others may come up short on some RDAs. For instance, the amount of calcium you need to meet the RDA is too much to fit into a tablet that you could easily swallow. Scan the full ingredients list so you know exactly what’s in the supplement you’re considering. Another way to get more of the nutrients you need is to shop for formulas geared to your age and sex. Since the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements, look for brands that have been “verified” by one of the three companies that test supplements in the U.S.: Pharmacopeia, Consumer Lab, or NSF International.
