LONG NOTES:

AARP: 6 Supplements You Might Actually Need After 50: About 3 out of 4 adults over age 60 said they had used at least one supplement in the previous 30 days, according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. One in 4 said they had taken four or more. 1. A high-quality multivitamin. 2. Fish oil/omega-3s (krill oil is better than fish oil – Fish  Fish am $28) 3. Calcium (I am cautious about this. Most people get enough in their diet, and too muck is hazardous. Just take 1,000 mg per day if you must.) 4. Vitamin D (at least 2,000 IU daily. Have your doctor check as many need much more) 5. Creatine (3-5g) Together, they improve performance by strengthening muscles (creatine) and delaying fatigue (taurine). 6. Vitamin B12

If your readers decide to consume curcumin as turmeric, drugs.com gives the following warnings:

“Turmeric when taken in medicinal amounts is considered likely unsafe to use during pregnancy. Taking turmeric during pregnancy could cause uterine bleeding or contractions.” “Turmeric can make it harder for your body to absorb iron.” “Turmeric can harm your liver, especially if you also use certain medicines for infections, birth control, high cholesterol, seizures, pain, or arthritis (including Advil).  “It may be harder for you to get a woman pregnant while you are using this product.” “Do not take turmeric without medical advice if you are using any of the following medicines: insulin or oral diabetes medicine; or medicine used to prevent blood clots–clopidogrel (Plavix), warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), aspirin, alteplase, dipyridamole, ticlopidine, and others. This list is not complete and many other drugs may affect turmeric.

Choline adequacy and health outcomes in vegetarian and vegan diets.  The findings indicated that vegetarian and vegan diets supply lower choline levels than omnivorous diets, but overt deficiency is rare, likely due to nutrient interactions and potential overestimation of requirements. Increasing intake of animal foods to meet choline requirements may be associated with increased chronic disease risk based on the broader dietary pattern evidence. In contrast, increasing intake of plant-based choline sources such as legumes and whole grains, along with supplementation when necessary during pregnancy, can promote nutrient adequacy and support more favorable health outcomes.

The Economist pg 71 – Climate of Fear, An ounce of prevention-more than a third of cancers arise from preventable risks.  Smoking (1 in 6), infections (1 in 10), and alcohol (4.5%). Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus, Liver cancer is from hepatitis B and C (get vaccinated). Stomach cancer by Heliobacter pylori (use pepto-bismol for an upset stomach).

Pg 72-Green tea is better for you than black tea. Neither green nor black tea is definitively “better,” as both offer unique health benefits from the same plant, but green tea often wins for its higher antioxidants (like EGCG) linked to cancer/metabolism, while black tea provides more caffeine for energy and its flavonoids support heart health. It contains L-theanine, an amino acid that boosts dopamine and serotonin, so you feel better. People over 50 who drank green vs. black tea were better on the healthy aging health index.  You do better with each cup up to 8 a day. This reduces stress  and improves sleeping. (The active ingredient, EGCG, is in Mito-C, equivalent to 4 cups taken twice a day for 8 total.) People on200 mg theanine in green tea significantly improved verbal fluency, cognitive function, sleep, and reduced depression and anxiety.

Science 5 Feb pg 570-Drivers of immunosenecense. The immune system works less well as we age.  It is the accumulation of B-cells whenever we get sick that suppresses the system. Therefore the healthier you can stay, especially from things that can be prevented by vaccination like COVID and Influenza, the better your immune system will be as you age.  Pg 571 – Paying for college pays!Cumulative earnings after college repay the cost to the student after 8 years, to society after 11yrs, and after 19 years for taxpayers.
