LONG NOTES:

Science 9 Oct pg 142 –  Beauty sleep for your brain. Difficulty sleeping 3x a week for 3 months in people over 50 led to 40% increased risk of dementia.

Pg 42 – Violence is contagious.  Mice witnessing aggression in their family were much more violent.  Be kind to your family!

Large study finds strongest link yet between the shingles vaccine and brain health-A large, new study tracked older adults who had received the shingles vaccination and received promising results. The scientists report that those who received a shingles vaccine shot were at a definitive health advantage over the control group.  They were less likely to receive a new dementia diagnosis during the next seven years. The analysis made use of a policy quirk to compare people born just before and after a vaccine eligibility cutoff in 2013. This helped separate cause from coincidence. Following chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) can go quiet in nerve cells for decades. Later, it can return as herpes zoster, better known as shingles.  After recovery from chickenpox, the virus stays latent in the nervous system and can reactivate as immunity wanes with age.

AARP: Here are 10 ways you might be sabotaging your gut health: 1. Eating a low-fiber diet 2. Skimping on fluids 3. Moving too little 4. Taking antibiotics you don’t need 5. Overusing laxatives 6. Misunderstanding probiotics- just eat fermented foods 7. Ignoring food safety rules 8. Going gluten-free if you don’t need to 9. Drinking too much alcohol (OK 1 for women, 2 for men) 10. Avoiding colon cancer screening

Sarcopenia as a Stronger Predictor for All-Cause Mortality Than Osteoporosis. These findings suggest that sarcopenia may be a more important predictor of mortality than osteoporosis in patients, highlighting the need for muscle health assessment.

Beyond Hormone Replacement: Phytoestrogens (PEs), a class of naturally occurring plant compounds primarily categorized into isoflavones, lignans, flavonoids, coumarins, and stilbenes, exhibit structural similarity to endogenous estrogens and exert regulatory effects through estrogen receptors. This comprehensive review examines the multifaceted roles of PEs in enhancing exercise performance and promoting health among postmenopausal women. Current evidence demonstrates that PEs not only ameliorate characteristic menopausal symptoms but, more significantly, improve physical function through multiple mechanisms: (1) augmenting muscle protein synthesis while mitigating inflammation and oxidative stress to optimize muscular performance; (2) modulating glucolipid metabolism and cardiovascular function to establish physiological foundations for exercise; and (3) preserving bone mineral density and regulating neurotransmitter activity to maintain motor coordination.

Reader questions: 1)How much dietary fat is necessary for optimal absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins? Studies on vitamin D absorption suggest about 11 grams of fat is optimal.  regular yogurt often contains around 3.1g of fat, while Greek yogurt has about 3.8g per serving. One study found that taking a supplement with a fat-containing meal resulted in 32% greater absorption.  2) Seeing that food natural pigment molecules (antioxidants) which we see in colored fruits and vegetables get their color from long chains of alternating single and double bonds (forming a non-polar environment) is the presence of dietary fat needed to absorb these also?  These foods contain enough food to facilitate the absorption of the carotenoids and flavonoids.
