Science 17 July pg 236-They have figured out how food allergies develop in children. They form after weaning. So if you expose infants to things like peanuts around the time of weaning the children will not become allergic to peanuts when they get older. All of the food allergies children have now can be prevented for children in the future if you feed them properly at weaning time. Pg 247 – After age 40, changes in female hormone levels trigger menopause. Women who remained sexually active more frequently after menopause had fewer menopausal symptoms.
Economist July 19, pg 64 – AI users exhibited markedly lower neural activity in parts of the brain associated with creative functions and attention. pg 65 -Broken mitochondria are repaired during sleep. Mitochondrial damage drives the urge to sleep. Pg 66 – Creatine can give athletes a 10-20% boost in performance of high intensity exercise. When muscles need a lot of ATP in a hurry, it is supplied by the phosphocreatine system, not mitochondria. Supplementing will give an extra boost, for brain and the brain. Despite having only 2% of your body mass, it consumes about 20% of your calories. It helps with cognition, and showed a 50% reduction in concussion damage. The general recommendation from Harvard Medical School for people who do take a creatine supplement is 3 to 5 grams per day. Pg. 7 – Winning the war against cancer: Half of men and a third of women can expect to have cancer. It kills 600,000 annually. But age-adjusted rates are falling. The rate is one third lower than in the 1990s. Biggest progress is in prevention-less smoking, vaccinating women for human papilloma virus that causes cervical cancer, and early intervention, when treatment is most effective. Aspirin cuts the risk of bowel cancer in half for those with Lynch syndrome. Metformin and Ozempic show promise, too.
