Science 18 April pg 267 – Artificial sweeteners make you hungier.Sucralose increased blood flow to the region of the brain, the hypothalamus, where appetite is controlled, producing greater hunger response.

Economist 19Apr pg64-Health effects of microplastics- A barrage of papers tentatively suggests these foreign bodies may play a role in a wide range of diseases. A study of about 250 patients in America, published in 2024 in the New England Journal of Medicine, linked the presence of microplastics in arterial plaque with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. A small study published in Nature Medicine in February reported that the brains of people with dementia had much higher amounts of microplastics than the brains of those without. In studies conducted with human tissues in the lab, microplastics have been found to trigger inflammation (the basis for many chronic diseases), fuel the growth of cancer and reduce the efficacy of antibiotics.

 

Influence of rapamycin on safety and healthspan metrics after one year: PEARL trial results. “Conclusions: Low-dose, intermittent rapamycin administration over 48 weeks is relatively safe in healthy, normative-aging adults, and was associated with significant improvements in lean tissue mass and pain in women. Future work will evaluate benefits of a broader range of rapamycin doses on healthspan metrics for longevity, and will aim to more comprehensively establish efficacy.”

But what I’ll mention here is the substantial literature on vaccines and dementia. This review by Lehrer and Rheinstein was a key article in my write-up about vaccines and dementia, and it cites studies about PD:

Vaccination Reduces Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and Other Neurodegenerative Disorders. Lehrer and Rheinstein. Discov Med. 2022 Sep-Oct;34(172):97. An excellent review article of the vax-dementia literature.

 

Understanding Cognitive Decline in Aging: Mechanisms and Mitigation Strategies – A Narrative Review. Cognitive decline is a natural process that accompanies aging. In some cases, such as in sarcopenia-burdened or diseased older adults, the disease course may be more rapid. we provide an in-depth analysis of the central-peripheral crosstalk. Additionally, we discuss high-intensity interval training (HIIT) as a promising strategy to counteract changes that accompany the aging process. Resistance (RHIIT) and aerobic (AHIIT) may be beneficial for cognitive health among the elderly, but their lack of empirical confirmation is a huge gap in the research.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), also known as plasma dilution, has garnered attention for its potential to rejuvenate biological age by removing age-associated plasma factors and replenishing with albumin. Studies involving Dr. Dobri Kiprov and Dr. Eric Verdin have explored optimal TPE frequencies for elderly individuals aiming to benefit from youthful plasma components, including microRNAs (miRNAs).”

Recommended TPE Frequency for Elderly Individuals:

  • Biweekly Regimen: A study demonstrated that administering TPE twice in the first week, followed by a three-week break, and repeating this cycle over three months led to significant biological age rejuvenation. This approach resulted in an average reduction of 2.61 years in biological age, as measured by 35 epigenetic clocks.

Monthly Regimen: Another group received monthly TPE sessions for six months, achieving an average biological age reduction of 1.32 years.

 

AARP: In the study, six specific botanicals were singled out because data from the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network identified them as the ones that are most likely to be associated with liver toxicity. These six supplements include: Ashwagandha, Black cohosh, Garcinia cambogi, Green tea extract, Red yeast rice, Turmeric/curcumin  is often promoted to ease joint pain from arthritis, which affects roughly half of adults 65 and older,

 

Why obesity isn’t about food. Our bodies function according to a circadian rhythm, which is governed by a master clock, known as the supraciasmatic nucleus (SCN), located in the hypothalamus of our brain.   These photoreceptors bind with retinol, a form of Vitamin A. When this bond is broken, Vitamin A becomes a wrecking ball in our metabolism, not allowing certain hormones such as leptin to work. Leptin gives us the feeling of being satiated from a meal.  Getting out into the Sun and exposing our eyes and skin gradually have been shown to have many potent health benefits, which don’t only include improving our immune system with vitamin D. Light from the sun also stimulates melanin, which helps give our metabolism a boost.
