LONG NOTES

Using data from studies that have followed participants for decades, researchers found that long-term consumption of two or more servings per week of yogurt was tied to lower rates of proximal colorectal cancer positive for Bifidobacterium, a bacterial species found in yogurt.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults of legal drinking age (21 years or older) choose not to drink alcohol or to drink alcohol in moderation (2 drinks or fewer in a day for men, 1 drink or fewer in a day for women).  Each year, about 20,000 adults in the United States die from alcohol-associated cancers. It is estimated most of these deaths may have been avoided if all adults had followed the recommended limits on alcohol use in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans instead of drinking above them.  Breast cancer is the most common alcohol-associated cancer among women. Colorectal cancer is the most common alcohol-associated cancer among men.

Adults should get 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly. Nearly half of our participants in young adulthood had suboptimal levels of physical activity, which was significantly associated with the onset of hypertension. Achieving at least twice the current minimum adult [physical activity] guidelines may be more beneficial for the prevention of hypertension than simply meeting the minimum guidelines,” the researchers wrote in their paper.  And by age 60, between 80 to 90 percent of Black men and women had hypertension, compared with just below 70 percent for White men and around half of White women.

Global average life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900. We can expect to live more than twice as long as our friends in 1900. As the chart shows, global average life expectancy was just 32 years at the beginning of the 20th century. This was a short life by today’s standards: in 2023, the average life expectancy had increased to 73 years. That’s 41 years longer.
