SUBJ: Morning versus evening choice for exercise is okay for healthy people
SUBtitle: No association between multivitamin use and risk of death
In my nutrition survey of experts, about half take a daily multivitamin. But this large NIH study indicates they have no value for life expectancy. A contribution to this newsletter is healthier and less expensive than your multivitamin. Donation link:Nutrition Newsletter

SHORT NOTES: The morning versus evening choice for exercise is critical only for patients with underlying health conditions
NIH study found no association between regular multivitamin use and a lower risk of death in healthy U.S. adults.
Academics researching online misinformation in the US are learning a hard lesson: Academic freedom cannot be taken for granted.
Supreme court ruling threatens role of science in regulation.
Lymphocytes as a living drug for cancer, lifileucel, as the first cellular therapy for a solid cancer.
Developing a pill to treat sickle cell disease: Progress but still being tested.
Very hot peppers? Spicy foods can trigger abdominal pain. For people with irritable bowel syndrome, spicy foods can trigger symptoms.
Capsaicin can kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells unharmed.
Ozone Therapy for Longevity- We have had excellent results with autoimmune conditions and post-COVID problems, etc.
A safe contraceptive tablet containing the bacteria lactobacilli found in yoghurt but enhanced to produce antibodies that bind toand remove sperm.
A laser device removed an arterial blockage in a patient’s leg to avoid amputation.
The Veriton SPECT/CT system performs a bone scan in 12 mins instead of the usual 45.
Vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for individuals with autism, that vitamin D deficiency early in embryonic life increases the risk of ASD.
LONG NOTES:
Perhaps morning vs evening does not matter, as studies vary. Perhaps the morning versus evening choice is more critical for patients with underlying health conditions, according to a brief analysis by someone at the Linus Pauling Institute.
The new NIH study, published in JAMA Network OpenTrusted Source, found no association between regular multivitamin use and a lower risk of death in healthy U.S. adults. The new NIH study aimed to assess the association between multivitamin use and death related to chronic diseases, specifically cardiovascular disease and cancer. The researchers also considered participants’ self-reported diet history, Healthy Eating Index 2015 diet score, smoking status, alcohol and coffee intake, race and ethnicity, education level, body mass index (BMI), physical activity level, and family history of cancer. Participants were followed for over two decades, with some followed for up to 27 years.
Science 5 July: Pg 7: Academics researching online misinformation in the US are learning a hard lesson: Academic freedom cannot be taken for granted. They face a concerted effort—including by members of Congress—to undermine or silence their work documenting false and misleading internet content. The claim is that online misinformation researchers are trying to silence conservative voices. The evidence suggests just the opposite. Pg 14: Supreme court ruling threatens role of science in regulation. Pg 25: Lymphocytes as a living drug for cancer: On 15 February 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new type of immunotherapy, lifileucel, as the first cellular therapy for a solid cancer. This adoptive cell transfer (ACT) immunotherapy uses the patient’s own tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), which are isolated from a resected growing tumor; expanded to large numbers in the laboratory using interleukin-2 (IL-2), a T cell growth factor; and then reinfused under specialized conditions into the same patient where they target tumor cells. These TILs thus represent a “living drug,” capable of proliferating many thousandfold as they circulate in the cancer-bearing patient. Pg 27: Developing a pill to treat sickle cell disease: Progress but still being tested.
Reader question: Are very hot peppers bad for your digestion? Although spicy foods don’t cause ulcers, they can trigger abdominal pain in some people. One study specifically highlighted that frequent consumption of spicy foods can trigger upper gastrointestinal symptoms in some people with dyspepsia (or, indigestion). For people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), spicy foods can also trigger symptoms. Another study showed that “those consuming spicy foods greater than or equal to 10 times per week were 92 percent more likely to have IBS compared with those who never consumed spicy foods.” When the researchers tried to analyze this finding based on gender, inflammatory bowel disease (or, IBD — Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), spicy foods can also trigger some symptoms.
However, capsaicin can kill cancer cells by a combination of on- and off-target mechanisms, though it remains unclear if this can be exploited for therapeutic purposes. The literature on capsaicin and cancer is vast and controversial. Capsaicin has been shown to induce apoptosis in many different types of cancer cell lines including pancreatic (19) colonic (24), prostatic (25), liver (26), esophagieal (27), bladder (28), skin (29), leukemia (30), lung (31), and endothelial cells (32), while leaving normal cells unharmed (11, 13, 19, 30).
A hormone-free birth-control pill. Rachel Teitelbaum moved to Israel from the USA in 2003 and founded Hervana Bio in 2008. It has developed a safe contraceptive tablet containing the bacteria lactobacilli found in yoghurt but enhanced to produce antibodies that bind to sperm, removing them from the fertilization process.
Laser treatment saves leg amputation. Doctors at Netanya’s Laniado Medical Center have for the first time in Israel used an AURYON laser device from Eximo Medical (see here previously) to remove an arterial blockage in a patient’s leg and avoid amputation. Israel’s Eximo was acquired by US-based AngioDynamics in 2019.
Faster, clearer CT bone scans. The Veriton SPECT/CT system from Israel’s Spectrum Dynamics performs a bone scan in 12 mins instead of the usual 45. Image quality is also far better, thanks to its camera with 12 heads, each with a novel digital radiation detector that gets near to the patient. Used at Schneider hospital and globally.
Associations Between Vitamin D and Core Symptoms in ASD: An Umbrella Review Our study concludes that vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for individuals with autism, that vitamin D deficiency early in embryonic life increases the risk of ASD, and that our study supports the idea that prevention begins with vitamin D supplementation early in life.
