SHORT NOTES:

Can we reverse aging debate, May 27, 5pm West coast time.

The field of psychiatry has historically been focused around the description and classification of symptoms, rather than on underlying causes.” Biology is coming.

Being away from all of the snarkiness that seems to dominate the daily news, we actually live in a beautiful, wonderful country.

Evening is the best time to exercise.

AI used to identify a new antibiotic.

The urine of teenagers who had vaped between 5 – 19 days a month had urinary lead levels 30% higher than occasional users.

Nearly 90% of adults over age 20 in the USA are at risk of developing heart disease.

Alzheimer’s disease amyloid protein can be destroyed by nanoparticles that generate light when exposed to low-intensity X rays.

LONG NOTES:

The quest to extend healthy human lifespan has reached a critical juncture, with two competing theories vying for dominance: Can we reverse aging, or slow it down and even halt it?vThis question will take center stage in a landmark debate, “How to Defeat Aging,” featuring Aubrey de Grey (https://www.levf.org) and Peter Fedichev  ( www.Gero.ai).  Watch the live YouTube broadcast here on May 27, 2024 at 5pm California time.

Apr 27 Economist pg 63 – Psychiatry’s blind spots-“The field of psychiatry has historically been focused around the description and classification of symptoms, rather than on underlying causes.” Biology is coming, whether psychiatry is ready or not.  The biological causes of mental disorders, genetic, epigenetic, microbiomal, behavioral, and neuronal, are very slowly being understood.

From Kevin’s Newsletter:

I am finding that by being away from all of the snarkiness that seems to dominate the daily news, we actually live in a beautiful, wonderful country that is populated by lots and lots of very nice people! So, take a break and visit America.

Evening is the best time to exercise. Their study found that obese individuals who exercised in the evenings were 28% less likely to die of any cause than those who worked out in the morning or afternoon.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and McMaster University recently used AI to identify a new antibiotic used in the treatment of Acinetobacter baumanni, an infectious hospital pathogen that’s been on the rise. It’s one of those very problematic pathogens that live on the surfaces of equipment and devices used throughout the hospital. In addition, the pathogen has the unique ability to morph its genetic code to accommodate changes in the environment making it an even more lethal bacteria. The AI was used to determine the structural properties of the antibiotic that could best affect the ability of the pathogen to survive. As I keep telling my colleagues, AI is becoming a ubiquitous contributor to all things healthcare – both good and bad.

In a study from the journal, Tobacco Control, the urine of teenage vapers was assessed. Those who had vaped between 5 – 19 days a month had urinary lead levels 30% higher than occasional users (i.e. use five or fewer days per month). Furthermore, uranium levels were twice as high for frequent vapers compared to occasional vapers. In other words, teens who vape are exposing themselves to exceptionally high levels of toxic metals known to cause long-term lung damage as well as cancers.

Russian Attack On US Healthcare Systems Accelerate – The increase in cyber alerts, and cyberattacks is shifting from occasional menace to outright, ongoing, daily concern for much of the US healthcare industry. What is even more ominous is that the attacks increasingly are originating from inside Russia.

In a report from NBC News on a new study, nearly 90% of adults over age 20 in the USA are at risk of developing heart disease as reported in JAMA. What’s particularly interesting is not only the overall increase in risk but also the fact that the risk is spreading in the overall population with younger people being affected. In addition, the risk is magnified by the degree of obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease evident across the population. In fact, the American Heart Association alerted physicians to a new condition, the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. CKM is diagnosed in stages ranging from zero = no risk factors for heart disease to 4 = people with diagnosed heart disease plus excess body fat, metabolic risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, or kidney disease. Of the 10,000 people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), almost 50% were at stage 2 of CKM or, at moderate risk of heart disease due to high blood sugar, hypertension, high cholesterol or chronic kidney disease. 15% of participants had advanced disease or, Stage 4.

From Michael’s newsletter:

From Alzheimer’s researcher sees the light. More about the groundbreaking research of Prof. Shai Rahimipour of Israel’s Bar-Ilan University (see here previously). His Alzheimer’s disease target is a soluble amyloid protein that can be destroyed by nanoparticles that generate light when exposed to low-intensity X rays.

Navigating the US health system. Israel’s Healthee (see here previously) helps employers and employees select and navigate the most suitable health plan. It also connects the user with round-the-clock telehealth services that are free of charge. [I tried to do this and it seemed I had to accept a demo.]

Doctors at Israel’s Sheba Medical Center are using low-level lasers to treat soldiers and civilians for chronic pain caused from wounds sustained in the Oct 7 war. They stimulate mitochondria which releases ATP causing muscles to contract. Many patients experience up to 80% immediate improvement.

Israel’s OrthoTreat has developed ModulX – a gel containing both a known medication plus a plant-based compound. The gel is injected directly onto the bone as a bonding agent where it strengthens the bone and improves its psychological structure.

Relationship Between Hypertension and Hearing Loss: Analysis of the Related Factors.  Hypertension is correlated with hearing loss, and the combination of  albumin-to-creatinine ratio and 24-hour systolic blood pressure  demonstrates an improved predictive capacity for hearing loss in hypertensive patients.

Addressing the Missing Links in Cardiovascular Aging. The aim of this manuscript is to provide a review of available options to enhance cardiovascular health and prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the aging population using a systems-biology approach. These include the role of the gut microbiome, the early identification and removal of environmental toxins, and finally age related sex hormones and supplement replacement which all influence aging. Resveratrol (RES) and Berberine are two additional nutraceuticals which offer potential as found to attenuate TMAO-induced atherosclerosis.   Curcumin is another well-documented nutraceutical with health benefits, including cardiovascular protection.   Derived from Indian turmeric, curcumin, the active ingredient, exhibits strong inhibitory effects on NF-kB and interleukin 6, which are markers of CVD progression as well.91 It also activates SIRT1 genes, contributing to its anti-senescent properties. Studies have demonstrated positive effects of curcumin on central arterial hemodynamics and endothelial function among postmenopausal women, who are at higher risk for CVD compared to their male counterparts.92,93 Curcumin has also been effective in preventing progression to overt diabetes in a placebo-controlled trial, with a low daily dose of just 0.5mg, highlighting its anti-aging capabilities.  Combining Curcumin and RES appears to have safe and potentially synergistic effects on the inflammatory cascade as and therefore warrants further large scale studies to see if it can drastically improve conservative treatment.96
