LONG NOTES:
The Economist: AI disinformation is the biggest threat in the next 2 years, more than global warming, war, or inflation.
Science 26 Apr-pg 367-are even insects conscious? There is strong scientific evidence that almost all creatures are “conscions”, e.g. not only experiencing stimuli, but also aware of pleasure, pain, and fear. Pg 384-Microbes and vitamin D modulate intestinal epithelial cell function to enhance antitumor microbes.
Here, we review the progress in research into using traditional Chinese medicine for aging and aging-related diseases (including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer). Furthermore, we summarize the potential mechanisms of action of traditional Chinese medicine and provide references for further studies on aging and aging-related diseases.
In summary, newly developed cut-off points of gait speed have adequate discriminatory ability to detect older men and women with high level of fat mass. Although gait speed may be considered as a satisfactory screening tool for fat mass, its utility in clinical practice needs to be further investigated.
Sarcopenic Obesity (SO) is a condition characterized by the coexistence of excessive obesity and loss of muscle mass or muscle function, and is prevalent in the elderly population.1 According to the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of SO is 12.6% in males and 33.5% in females,2 and with the rapid growth of the global elderly population, it is estimated that 100–200 million people will be affected by SO by the year 2051.3 SO reduces the quality of life of the patients, and induces the risk of fall, fracture, disability, or increased mortality.4 Currently, there is no cure for SO, and its main treatments include exercise intervention, nutritional intervention, bariatric surgery and drug intervention; among them, the effect of exercise intervention to improve sarcopenic obesity is more certain.5,6 Exercise may delay the onset and progression of SO by modulating protein metabolism, inflammatory responses, mitochondrial function, and muscle factors.7 Aerobic exercise reduces adipose tissue and helps treat obesity by increasing energy expenditure and improving insulin sensitivity.8,9 Resistance exercise promotes the increase of skeletal muscle mass, muscle strength and fat tissue reduction in the elderly
Intermittent fasting and health outcomes: a umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials. Our findings suggest that Intermittent fasting (IF) may have beneficial effects on a range of health outcomes for adults with overweight or obesity, compared to continuous energy restriction (CER) or non-intervention diet. Specifically, IF may decrease WC, fat mass, LDL-C, TG, TC, fasting insulin, and SBP, while increasing HDL-C and FFM. Notably, it is worth noting that the SBP lowering effect of IF appears to be weaker than that of CER.
