SUBJ: Fish oil supplements are hazardous

SUBtitle: Lack of SAMe drives muscle aging

Lots of news this week.  What a shame I have advocated for fish oil supplements for so long. It is hard to accept change at 75.

SHORT NOTES:

A study by Albert et al found concern about major hazards from taking fish oil supplements.  MDR Pristinium Krill Oil is much safer.

“Depletion of SAMe leading to loss of heterochromatin drives muscle stem cell ageing”

Overall, our understanding of the drivers of human aging is still inadequate.

Only “moderate” levels of physical activity – such as 4,000 steps a day or even less – have a positive effect on brain health.

LONG NOTES:

A study by Albert et al found concern about fish oil supplements – 92% had harmful lipid peroxide levels, 79% were deficient in EPA and 75% deficient in DHA. I think I may stop taking fish oil supplements and just eat fish twice a week.  MDR replies “Our Pristinium Krill Oil is low in Peroxide value < 1 mEq peroxide/kg, best quality (Much better than most of the products below showing the value is > 5.).”

“Depletion of SAM leading to loss of heterochromatin drives muscle stem cell ageing”  this has been proposed as one of the causes of ageing.

Overall, our understanding of the drivers of human aging is still inadequate; yet with a global aging population, elucidating the causes of aging has the potential to revolutionize biomedical research.

To educate physicians and other health care professionals on the fundamentals of nutrition, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has launched a new article series titled Nutrition for the Clinician. The effort supports the White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and its directives to expand nutrition knowledge of health care providers, an effort long supported by the American Society for Nutrition.

A daily multivitamin may slow memory loss among those 60 and older by about two years, according to a study released Thursday. It is the third in a series of studies assessing the cognitive effects of a daily multivitamin on older adults. And a systematic review, or meta-analysis, of the three studies accompanying the most recent paper said their cumulative results were similar: The group taking a multivitamin was two years younger in memory function compared with the group taking a placebo.

The Lancet Healthy Longevity study, it was noted that “wearing hearing aids if you need them may help protect you from early death…there was no difference in risk of death over the research period between people who used hearing aids occasionally and those who never wore them, but regular users were at a significant lower risk.”

The United Nations recently reported that almost one-half of humanity live in nations where more is spent on servicing debt than on either health or education. It affects 3.3 billion people.

In a recent study from the NIH, it was noted that “only about 15%” of eligible individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 took medication that has been shown to make a marked difference in outcomes – and, that’s Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir (= Paxlovid)!! BTW, I learned about the issue in New York Times. The reluctance is on both the provider (doctor) side as well as the consumer side for different reasons. This reduces the rate of long-term COVID.

At 93, the Irishman is a four-time world champion in indoor rowing, with the aerobic engine of a healthy 30- or 40-year-old and the body-fat percentage of a whippet. He’s also the subject of a new case study, published last month in the Journal of Applied Physiology, that looked at his training, diet and physiology. What made Morgan especially interesting to the researchers was that he hadn’t begun sports or exercise training until he was 73.  he developed this fitness with a simple, relatively abbreviated exercise routine, the researchers noted. Consistency: around 40 minutes a day.cA mix of easy, moderate and intense training: About 70 percent of these workouts are easy, with Morgan hardly laboring. Another 20 percent are at a difficult but tolerable pace, and the final 10 at an all-out, barely sustainable intensity. Weight training: Two or three times a week, he also weight-trains.  A high-protein diet: He eats plenty of protein.

AARP: Biohacker spending $2m a year to reverse his age beaten by man paying just $30,000 a year.  One step is donating blood to refresh his blood supply.

Scientists uncover how young blood rejuvenates aging brains.  Scientists from across the world have discovered that a group of molecules released by platelets known as platelet factor 4 (or PF4) are the crucial last step in delivering the benefits of these three activities to the brain. What’s more, PF4 can even help the brain reverse its age. PF4 is released following injections of blood plasma (blood without the red blood cells) or klotho, or by exercising.

From Outline, Gifford-Metabolic syndrome has 5 criteria 1. High blood pressure 130/85, 2. High triglycerides 150mg/dl, 3. Low HDL below 40 mg/dl men 50 women, 4. Waist 40in in men, 50 women, 5. Fasting glucose above 110 mg/dl. Three or more of these criteria is metabolic syndrome, obesity is just one criterion. 90% of the US ticks one of these.20 to 40% of nonobese adults have metabolic syndrome! 67 million obese and 33 million nonobese. Triple  the risk of all-cause mortality and heart disease.  High fructose corn syrup elevates uric acid causing high blood pressure and gout.

There is a relatively new procedure in the UK, in which steam is micro-injected into the prostate under local anaesthetic. It kills the excess tissue, which is slowly disposed of naturally. The effects take about 6 weeks as the prostate shrinks back to normal size. Side effects or nerve damage are very rare with this procedure.
