SUBJ: prepare a Final Document

SUBtitle: Berberine inhibits atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity

Next week I am at the Linus Pauling meetings in Corvallis, OR, Tuesday and Weds! I hope to see some of you there. I will share my research poster on my monkey survey of newsletter readers like you at that meeting, and to you in my next newsletter.

It also showed that over that same period the vast majority of accumulated wealth accrued to the Top 10% of Americans with the bottom 50% remaining stagnant over the same time period

LONG NOTES:

A treat? At a college reunion, I was told that everyone ought to prepare a Final Document.  This is a file (you can cut and paste from my website) that contains all the information necessary should you die or become incapacitated – like where is your will, have you a medical power of attorney, etc.  One never knows when this might happen, and the final document contains all the information someone will need to take care of your affairs if you die, and includes all the things you should have prepared.

Berberine is a plant alkaloid possessing scientifically determined mechanisms of the prevention of the development of atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, as well as cardiovascular complications and cancer.  One study for diabetics used 0.5g twice a day as the dosage. There are a ton of reliable articles if you google “berberine, NIH”.

Once-a-day injection to treat Parkinson’s. Israel’s Pharma Two B (see here previously) is presenting the full results of its Phase 3 trial of its once-a-day injection of its P2B001 treatment for Parkinson’s disease. P2B001 combines low-dose pramipexole with low-dose rasagiline. It relieves PD symptoms with few side effects.

Israel’s BioProtect (see here previously) has received US FDA’s clearance for its biodegradable balloon spacer that protects healthy tissue against damage during prostate cancer radiation therapy.

The Biomarkers of Aging Consortium unites about 200 prominent geroscientists in an attempt to outline an approach to biomarkers of aging and standardize some of its important aspects.  This paper defines aging as “the process of accumulation of consequences of life, such as molecular and cellular damage, that leads to functional decline, chronic diseases, and ultimately mortality”. This might be the first agreed-upon definition of aging.  The definition of biological age is a bit longer but is worth quoting here in full: “Conceptually, an individual’s age defined by the level of age-dependent biological changes, such as molecular and cellular damage accumulation. In practical use, this is often summarized as a number (in units of time) matching the chronological age where the average person in a reference population shares the individual’s level of age-dependent biological changes.” There are no FDA-recognized surrogate endpoints of aging yet, although epigenetic clocks, being used in many ongoing trials, probably come closest.

Zone 2 Endurance Training and Its Relationship With Longevity, Cardiovascular, and Musculoskeletal Health. Short bursts of high-intensity interval-type training have been a popular method of cardiovascular exercise for the last ten years. However, frequent training at such a high-intensity interval training multiple times per week may result in an accumulation of excessive metabolic stress and potential impairments in health & performance [2]. Dr Peter Attia has been a strong advocate of the 80:20 principle, by which individuals should spend 80% of their weekly training volume in easy, low-intensity (Zone 2), with only 20% of their training at high-effort, high-intensity (Zone 5). Zone 2: 60-70% Maximal Heart Rate, Zone 5: 90-100% Maximal Heart Rate

AdvNutSept– In 1997, the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) dietary reference intakes (DRI) Committee established a magnesium (Mg) tolerable upper intake level (UL) for adults of 350 mg/d from supplemental intake alone. Diarrhea was the limiting factor. The safety of oral Mg dietary supplements exceeding the UL is currently in debate. Increasing the UL may result in more Mg supplementation, decreasing the prevalence of undernutrition for this nutrient and thus providing additional protection against numerous chronic diseases; Consumption of nuts and berries are considered part of a healthy eating pattern. Nuts and berries contain a complex nutrient profile consisting of essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and phenolics in quantities that improve physiological outcomes. The spectrum of health outcomes that may be impacted by the consumptions of nuts and berries includes cardiovascular, gut microbiome, and cognitive, among others. Recently, new insights regarding the bioactive compounds found in both nuts and berries have reinforced their role for use in precision nutrition efforts; Cancer is one of the primary causes of death worldwide, and its incidence continues to increase yearly. Despite significant advances in research, the search for effective and nontoxic preventive and therapeutic agents remains greatly important. Cancer is a multimodal disease, where various mechanisms play significant roles in its occurrence and progression. This highlights the need for multitargeted approaches that are not only safe and inexpensive but also provide effective alternatives for current therapeutic regimens.β-Sitosterol (SIT), the most abundant phytosterol found in various plant foods, represents such an option. Preclinical evidence over the past few decades has overwhelmingly shown that SIT exhibits multiple anticancer activities against varied cancers, such as liver, cervical, colon, stomach, breast, lung, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, in addition to leukemia, multiple myeloma, melanoma, and fibrosarcoma. However, no clinical trials have yet proven this potential; This umbrella review aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of current evidence from prospective studies on the diverse health effects of cheese consumption. Cheese consumption was inversely associated with all-cause mortality RR = 0.95 cardiovascular mortality (RR = 0.93)  incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) (RR = 0.92), coronary heart disease (CHD) (RR = 0.92), stroke (RR = 0.93), estrogen receptor-negative (ER−) breast cancer (RR = 0.89) type 2 diabetes (RR = 0.93), total fracture (RR = 0.90), and dementia; Childhood and adolescence are critical periods for optimizing skeletal growth. Dairy products are valuable sources of bone-beneficial nutrients, particularly calcium and protein. Dairy supplementation during growth leads to a small but significant increase in bone mineral mass parameters, and these findings are generally supported by the changes in several biochemical parameters related to bone health; Each cell is equipped with a conserved housekeeping mechanism, known as autophagy, to recycle exhausted materials and dispose of injured organelles via lysosomal degradation. Autophagy is an early-stage cellular response to stress stimuli in both physiological and pathological situations.  Accumulated evidence suggests that intermittent fasting or calorie restriction can lead to the induction of adaptive autophagy and increase longevity of eukaryotic cells. However, prolonged calorie restriction with excessive autophagy response is harmful and can stimulate a type II autophagic cell death;

National Cancer Institute: For women in their 70s and older, the risk of overdiagnosis with routine screening mammography is substantial, a new study suggests. The findings highlight the need for conversations between older women and their health care providers about the potential benefits and harms of continuing screening mammography.
