LONG NOTES:
AJCN July – Breastfeeding and the Obesity Pandemic. Studies continue to shed light on the biological plausibility of the association between maternal obesity and suboptimal lactation.
Dietary Supplements are an Important Nutrient Source for Older Americans– What Does This Mean for Dietary Guidance? There is a need for additional research to examine why supplements are replacing nutrient-dense foods among this population.
Food is Medicine is an umbrella term for programs that respond to the critical link between diet and health involving (1) the provision of Food is Medicine services (medically tailored meals, medically tailored groceries, produce prescriptions, teaching kitchens, etc.), and (2) a nexus to the healthcare system hopefully deploying other nutrition or lifestyle medicine care to its communities.
Although it is well established that lowering dietary SFA -sat;d fatty acid- intake has a beneficial effect on LDL cholesterol concentrations, findings increasingly indicate an opposite effect on lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentrations. Translation-cholestero and heart disease risk are unrelated- In recent years, many studies have firmly established a role for an elevated Lp(a) concentration as a genetically regulated, causal, and prevalent risk factor for CVD. However, there is less awareness of the effect of dietary SFA intake on Lp(a) concentrations. This study discusses this issue and highlights the contrasting effect of reducing dietary SFA intake on LDL cholesterol and Lp(a), 2 highly atherogenic lipoproteins.
Higher intake of dietary flavonols, specifically dietary quercetin, is associated with lower odds of frailty onset over 12 years of follow-up among adults in the Framingham Heart Study
Higher serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with lower type 2 diabetes risk. 25(OH)D varies due to skin pigmentation and weight. Among people with prediabetes, particularly for Black and White race groups and those with BMI < 40 kg/m2, the optimal 25(OH)D concentration may be ≥ 40 ng/mL to optimize diabetes-prevention efforts. Intakes of at least 4,000 IU daily from all sources would be needed to maintain 25(OH)D levels of 40 to 60 ng/mL.
Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are used for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including angina pectoris, and hypertension; however, the effect on survival remains uncertain. CCBs impair fibrinolysis and have been linked to elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy), a CVD risk marker. In patients with suspected suspected stable angina pectoris, CCB treatment was associated with increased mortality risk primarily among patients not treated with B-vitamins-folic acid, B12, and/or B6. Take B vitamin supplement if you are taking drugs for angina pectoris or hypertension
The adverse health effects of high ultraprocessed food and drink (UPFD) consumption are well documented.
Our findings suggest that higher adherence to the Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet was associated with better cognitive function and potentially slower cognitive decline in later life.
Our findings implicate that the metabolic signature reflecting healthy lifestyle is a potential causal mediator in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), highlighting the importance of early lifestyle intervention and metabolic status tracking for precise prevention of RA.
Older adults with increased adherence to an overall plant-based diet and a healthful plant-based diet over 3 y have a lower risk of cognitive impairment, whereas those with increased adherence to an unhealthy plant-based diet had a higher risk of cognitive impairment.
Advice and guidance to consume a low-carb breakfast appears to be a simple dietary strategy to reduce overall energy and carbohydrate intake and improve several continuous glucose monitoring variables when compared with a low-fat breakfast in persons living with diabetes.
Greater adherence to 4 healthy dietary pattern indices [healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), Mediterranean diet score (MDS), recommended food score (RFS), and Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay Diet (MIND)] was individually associated with larger brain volumes in specific regions. This study shows a comprehensive picture of the consistent associations of midlife dietary patterns with risk of dementia and brain health, underscoring the potential benefits of a healthy diet in the prevention of dementia.
Almonds can be incorporated into the diets of habitual snackers to improve diet quality, without evidence for changes in body weight, compared with a popular discretionary snack food.
Daily multivitamin supplementation, compared with placebo, improves memory in older adults. Multivitamin supplementation holds promise as a safe and accessible approach to maintaining cognitive health in older age. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04582617.
Science 30 June pg. 1309-Consciousness bet lost by Christof Koch – The biggest mystery left to science is what is consciousness. Koch bet Chalmers ten years ago that by now we would understand the neural basis of consciousness. He lost the bet. This article explains the two current leading theories of what makes us conscious.
pg 1313-1317 describes success and technology to freeze living tissues and organisms indefinitely and then thaw and bring them back to life in perfect condition. Many have thought of this to go into stasis until their fatal disease can be cured. This article makes that seem a reality soon.
Pg 1304 – Muscular dystrophy gene therapy approved by FDA
Pg 1304 –lab grown chicken has been approved for human consumption by FDA
Current Developments in Nutrition June 2023: As the only place in a store where customers must pass through, checkouts may be especially influential over purchases. Most foods and beverages at checkout consisted of candy, SSBs, salty snacks, and sweets and failed to meet the healthy checkout standards;
Roughly 80% of total energy intake (TEI) in most human diets originates from digestible carbohydrates (eCarb) and fat (eFat). A lower ratio of carb to fat intake was associated with better global cognition among older adults at risk for dementia. [in other words, eat less carbs, more fat].
In contrast with the prevailing notion that “a calorie is just a calorie,”there are clear differences, within and between individuals, in the metabolic response to different macronutrient sources. Recent findings challenge this oversimplification; calories from different macronutrient sources or consumed at different times of day have metabolic effects beyond their value as fuel. Here, we summarize discussions conducted at a recent NIH workshop that brought together experts in calorie restriction, macronutrient composition, and time-restricted feeding to discuss how dietary composition and feeding schedule impact whole-body metabolism, longevity, and healthspan.
The study underscores the need for targeted, school-based interventions to address the risk factors contributing to overweight and obesity among school children aged 6 to 18 years. These interventions should include curriculum-embedded education about healthy eating and physical activity, fostering an environment that promotes healthy food choices and regular exercise, and incorporating behavioral modification strategies.
4,000+ spine operations. The xvision Augmented Reality Spine System from Israel’s Augmedics (see here previously) has now been used to treat over 4,000 patients and implant more than 20,000 pedicle screws across 21 U.S. states. It consistently demonstrates 97-100% accuracy across multiple patient studies.
Brain block may cure addicts. (TY Nevet) Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers have identified in the laboratory that the claustrum area of the brain is vital to preventing addiction to certain medications. Existing remedies could help susceptible individuals increase their resistance and self-control.
