LONG NOTES:

Science 5May-pg468-autoimmune diseases-80 different disorders affecting 5% of the population; pg 492-High protein consumption benefits endurance athletes, plant and animal proteins provide equal benefit; pg 493-calcification of the aorta is a serious disorder. Calcium supplements may be hazardous as they promote this condition. For osteoporosis, get exercise and vitamin D, the normal diet provides ample calcium. Science 12May-pg571-latest Alzheimer’s antibody is not a miracle drug. Trials  highlight stark risk-benefit analysis.Whether the benefits endure and can be afforded is unclear.

“Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Intervention Prevents Telomere Attrition, with Association to Reduced Cardiovascular Mortality—Sub-Study of a Randomized Clinical Trial” Supplementation with Se and coenzyme Q10 combined prevented significantly leukocyte telomere attrition in elderly people low in Se, which shows the importance of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
mechanisms in the prevention of ageing.

J Acad Nutr Diet . 2023 Mar;123(3):417-426.e3. Meal Skipping and Shorter Meal Intervals Are Associated with Increased Risk of All-Cause and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality among US Adults. A critique noted the people eating just one meal a day had other risk factors[1].

Rapamycin (sirolimus) is an FDA-approved drug with immune-modulating and growth-inhibitory properties. Evaluation of off-label rapamycin use to promote healthspan in 333 adults. Rapamycin can be used safely in adults of normal health status.

A study at Israel’s Beilinson hospital is looking at why many Parkinson’s patients develop an obsessive desire to take up art or creative writing for the first time. Researchers are investigating if the area of the brain affected by the disease is also responsible for creativity.

Could ‘Personalized Nutrition’ be the next health-tech buzz? It takes a variety of factors and the interactions between them into account, including genetics, microbiome, age, sex, metabolism, dietary habits, lifestyle, environmental exposure and physical activity; all of which serve to enable users to stay in ship shape and optimally nourished.  Eating habits may affect our health by 300 to 400%, while genetics is considered to affect our health by 30 to 40%. So what we eat is extremely important,” she said.

According to the U.S. Population Reference Bureau, the number of
Americans age 65 and older is projected to double by the year 2060, to
95 million people. Currently, about 16% of the U.S. population is aged
65 or older. By 2060, that figure will reach 23%. In this article, we explore these important questions, the mechanisms involved in these processes, and where botanical medicine and phytochemicals may serve as modifiers of these mechanisms.

The pineal hormone melatonin has many and various physiologic actions.
While it plays key roles in sleep and chronobiologic functions, melatonin also possesses antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties and helps modulate mitochondrial homeostasis.

CurrDevDietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) have become increasingly food-based guidelines. The Healthy United States–Style Eating Pattern features fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy, with limits placed on added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat. Recent measures of nutrient density have followed suit, incorporating both nutrients and food groups. Most recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed to redefine the concept of a “healthy” food for regulatory purposes. To qualify as healthy, foods will need to contain specific minimum amounts of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and whole grains, with limits placed on added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat. The present concern was that the proposed criteria, formulated by the FDA per Reference Amount Customarily Consumed, were so stringent that few foods would pass. We applied the proposed FDA criteria to foods in the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS 2017–2018). The criteria were met by 58% of fruits, 35% of vegetables, 8% of milk and dairy products, and 4% of grain products. Many foods commonly considered to be healthy by consumers and the USDA alike did not pass the proposed FDA criteria. Federal agencies seem to define healthy in different ways.Nut May’23-

Among the several benefits of rapamycin to human health, recent research has begun to demonstrate that rapamycin may have significant benefits for women’s health, particularly in preserving ovarian function, extending fertility, and delaying menopause. How does rapamycin work to promote ovarian function? In this article, Dr. Ryan Marshall from the Metabolic & Molecular Physiology Research Group at the University of Birmingham reviews these latest findings and how rapamycin may be utilized to enhance reproductive health and longevity in women.

NPR: Highly processed foods cause weight gain. Foods with identical ingredients that are not highly processed caused weight loss.  All of the additives in highly processed foods, not the fat, sugar, or salt, are a major cause of obesity.

WebMD: If you’re stressed out, not sleeping well, or (surprise) not eating enough fat, you could be begging for a bigger waistline. These tips can help you turn things around.
