LONG NOTES:

First anti-aging pills to hit shelves in 2028, expert predicts – as Silicone Valley races to conquer death.  As the article concludes the best treatment we have currently is exercise. [Roc notes: Please see the list of supplements I now take.  There are many recent additions, already claimed as anti-aging in scientific research literature, including melatonin, b-hydroxybutyrate and others.]

Another important way to reduce/prevent osteoarthritis. Systemic
β-Hydroxybutyrate can be increased either through a ketogenic diet or
dietary supplementation. Senescence chondrocytes play an important role in Osteoarthritis progression. BHB alleviate the chondrocytes senescence under oxidative stress.

Science 7 Apr pg 51: Scientists used to believe monthly estrus cycle of women influenced spontaneous behavior.  New study shows in females it has no effect on behavior, and that male mice showed more variation in behavior than females.

Results confirmed a link between high blood pressure and dementia. Risk was different depending on racial and ethnic identity. In fact, Black people who had high blood pressure were 10 times more likely to have dementia than those with normal blood pressure. Hispanic people with high blood pressure were 8 times more likely, and White people with high blood pressure were 3 times more likely to have dementia than those without high blood pressure.

Hair-straightening products may raise cancer risk. New research out of the NIH-led Sister Study linked frequent use of these products – more than four times a year – with twice the risk of uterine cancer.

Science 31 Mar pg 1298 – Obesity causes autoimmune diseases-Compelling epidemiological evidence reveals a strong association between being overweight or obese and the risk of developing autoimmune diseases. Adipose tissue is immunologically very active, causing chronic activation of both innate and adaptive immune cells. Therapeutic strategies include calorie restriction, metformin, rapamycin, and pioglitazone.

No time for a long workout? No problem! “Vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity” (VILPA) – or short bursts of activity in the midst of daily life – can be just as good for you. A new study looked at the effect of VILPA on heart health, cancer, and other causes of death. It used wearable device data from more than 25,000 adults. Results showed that 4.4 minutes per day of VILPA were linked to 26-30% lower risk of all-cause and cancer death. It was also linked to 32-34% lower risk of death from heart disease. The best part: Active bursts can come from routine tasks, like walking up the stairs, gardening, or a brisk walk while shopping. MORE

“Potential reversal of biological age in women following an 8-week methylation-supportive diet and lifestyle program: a case series.” Here we report on a case series of six women who completed a methylation-supportive diet and lifestyle program designed to impact DNA methylation and measures of biological aging. The intervention consisted of an 8-week program that included diet, sleep, exercise and relaxation guidance, supplemental probiotics and phytonutrients and nutritional coaching. DNA methylation and biological age analysis (Horvath DNAmAge clock (2013), normalized using the SeSAMe pipeline [a]) was conducted on blood samples at baseline and at the end of the 8-week period. Five of the six participants exhibited a biological age reduction of between
1.22 and 11.01 years
from their baseline biological age.

Programmed versus non-programmed evolution of aging. What is the evidence?
Highlights
• Longevity is a species-specific trait
• Old animals are present in the wild at significant levels in many species
• There is a genetic program determining the longevity of each animal
species
• Outcomes from pro-longevity interventions and various traits of
long-lived species reinforce the programmed aging concept
• Programmed aging is an evolutionary mechanism of broad sense group
selection that can reach the ecosystem level

Alpha-ketoglutarate as a potent regulator for lifespan and healthspan: Evidences and perspectives. Recently, alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) has been introduced as a potential anti-aging metabolite that can control several functions in organisms, thereby increases longevity and improves healthspan. Unlike other synthetic anti-aging drugs, AKG is one of the metabolites of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle,

Kevin Fickenscher (KF) -“There’s a fundamental flaw in fee-for-service, which is that it creates—and I am not impugning doctors here—a perverse incentive of more services means more fees.”  I’m a proponent of “value-based care delivery” – an approach that is still not widely available nor widely defined as an effective method for health care payments. However, at the same time, it’s clear that the traditional fee-for-service model is slowly – but surely – bankrupting the Medicare system.

KF-New England Journal of Medicine (March 23, 2023)-another vindication for those of us who are admitted coffeeholics. I admit it. First thing in the morning is a cup of Joe for me. Then, another before sauntering around the house trying to figure out all of the meetings – dare I say Zoom meetings – that I’ll be facing for the day. Then, there’s breakfast with more Joe followed by meeting upon meetings with lots of Joe. I could continue but you get the picture. The NEJM article essentially did a study of a-fib and v-fib prevalence while coffeeholics went about their day. The finding? = Conclusion: “In this randomized trial, the consumption of caffeinated coffee did not result in significantly more daily premature atrial contractions than the avoidance of caffeine.” However, it did suggest the potential for an association with premature ventricular contractions. Hmmm. My personal N of 1 study does not support that hypothesis. Whew!;

KF- seven million people could die of diseases linked to excessive salt consumption before the decade’s end unless governments immediately pass tighter restrictions on salt.”; the cost to society [of obesity] is significant as a result of the health conditions linked to…overweight. The report estimates that by 2035, the overall cost to society will annually exceed $4 trillion or about 3% of global GDP;

KF-…two-thirds (63%) of a nationwide group of doctors and nurses said they are experiencing a moderate or great deal of burnout at work; an increasing number of organizations are moving into the primary care space. Specifically, CVS, Walgreens Boots, Amazon, United Health Group, and others are seeking to establish footprints in primary care;

KF-while the acute phase of COVID may be coming to a close, the potentially much bigger longitudinal issues of the chronic phase are looming on the horizon. A new study published by JAMA Health Forum published in early March highlighted the increased post-COVID risk of a number of cardiovascular diseases. First, there was an increase in general cardiovascular mortality of 2.8% for Long COVID patients compared to 1.2% for uninfected patients; The Ugly – The ominous report on the implications of complications derived from those experiencing Long COVID. We are just at the beginning of uncovering the potential problems…

WebMD-exercises for better sleep- aerobic exercise, strength training, resistance exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, Yoga, deep breathing, Stretching.

WebMD- You can come up with a million reasons for not being physically active. Some might even be valid. But know this: Stillness is bad. Roughly 3.2 million people die each year because of physical inactivity. Regular exercise, especially among older adults, is critical to good health.
