Another Journal I now review thanks to subscribers is Current Developments in Nutrition, CDN.  For distinguished journals like this, I preface the note with an abbreviation.  They are much more reliable than AARP or WebMD that I note occasionally for their reminders of what is important.

SHORT NOTES: In 6 placebo-controlled clinical trials, when taking calcium supplements, relative risk of Myocardial Infarction was 15% higher, of heart disease 24% higher, or stoke, 15% higher; Repeated fasting may restrict immune system health; South Indian diet is rice, legume, vegetable, 100% plant protein and nuts based for aeons since time immemorial; IBM Installs World’s First Quantum Computer for Accelerating Healthcare Research; Foods and supplements containing microorganisms with expected beneficial effects are increasingly investigated and utilized in the treatment of human illness, including irritable bowel syndrome; Trouble sleeping may be associated with high blood pressure; Long COVID less likely in later variants; soda ought to be controlled like cigarettes!; inflammation is a major cause of age-associated disease in the US; Top cancer fighting foods – Colorful fruits and veggies, …; ageing could be perceived as a software design flaw; The Bad – The lack of appreciation that too many of us have for the impact of humanity on life.

LONG NOTES:

CDN 3/23 – Hazards of calcium supplements on CVD cannot be excluded. We conducted a meta-analysis of all placebo-controlled randomized trials assessing the effects of calcium supplements alone or with vitamin D on CHD, stroke, and all-cause mortality. Calcium was not significantly associated with any excess risk ??? [In 6 placebo-controlled clinical trials, when taking calcium supplements, relative risk of Myocardial Infarction was 15% higher, of heart disease 24% higher, or stoke, 15% higher. That seems significant to me.]

Science 24 Mar 23 pg1202- Repeated fasting may restrict immune system health.  Changes in diet can affect how immune cells are distributed.  Repeated bouts of fasting and refeeding enhance murine susceptibility to infection by P. aeruginosa, so altered immune pool may have negative consequences for host defense.

Reader comment: Your latest newsletter Mar 25 lists a number of findings that have been long known in India and  are a _key_part of the South Indian–I emphasize South Indian rice, legume, vegetable, 100% plant protein and nuts based for aeons since time immemorial–diet, not the diet in the North that you are familiar with (dished out in Indian restaurants here.) For example, every meal in South India ends with rice and yogurt, and every meal includes freshly cooked  lentils/legumes/nuts…It is also one of the highest fiber content (both soluble and insoluble) diets in the world. Everybody ginns up Med diet, but no one talks about South Indian diet.

CDN 3/23 -Foods and supplements containing microorganisms with expected beneficial effects are increasingly investigated and utilized in the treatment of human illness, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Research points to a prominent role of gut dysbiosis in the multiple aberrations in gastrointestinal function, immune balance, and mental health seen in IBS. Lactic acid bacteria with immunomodulatory, antipathogenic, and digestive properties are prevalent in products such as sauerkraut and kimchi. The low-risk profile, combined with biological considerations and reasoning and considerable circumstantial and anecdotal evidence, indicate that fermented vegetables are worthy of consideration by health professionals and patients dealing with irritable bowel syndrome -related issues.

AARP – Trouble sleeping, especially trouble falling asleep, may be associated with high blood pressure, according to a new study from China. This is the first study to show that certain people with insomnia are at risk for high blood pressure, said coauthors.

Science 24 Mar 23 pg1174 – Long COVID less likely in later variants – In major studies, risk of COVID symptoms persisting 4 weeks was 4.5% with Omicron vs. 10.8% with Delta strain.

The seven dangers of soda! It ought to be controlled like cigarettes!

The hidden dangers of inflammation! This is a major cause of age-associated disease in the US.  Easy ways to avoid include reducing stress, getting exercise, eating less red meat and more fish.  Read my information about inflammation here.

WebMD – Top cancer fighting foods – Colorful fruits and veggies, Fortified breakfast cereals and whole wheat products are good sources of folate. So are orange juice, melons, and strawberries, asparagus and eggs. You can also find it in beans, sunflower seeds, and leafy green vegetables like spinach or romaine lettuce, no processed meats, no Frying, grilling, and broiling meats, tomatoes, esp. cooked, tea, grapes, water, beans, less alcohol, Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale, turmeric, cayenne, less. Sugar. Both the American Cancer Society and the American Institute for Cancer Research emphasize that getting cancer-fighting nutrients from foods like nuts, fruits, and green leafy vegetables is vastly superior to getting them from supplements. [I try to do both! Mito-C has active ingredients of green tea, blueberries, and much more-twice a day!]

Our recent perspective/review on how ageing could be perceived as a software design flaw may be of interest to the group:

Basically, the hypothesis is that most (but not all) ageing changes are not a result of a build-up of molecular damage but are rather a product of regulated processes. As the genetic software runs, its sequence of events is reflected in shifting cellular epigenetic states, a model that fits the highly accurate epigenetic clocks ticking from shortly after conception until old age.
