SUBtitle: genetics account for about 25 percent of a person’s life span

Thanks to the kind support and new readers, I am also starting to upload my research posters.  Here is the link to how my poster on how vitamin C reduces the risk of damage from having a stroke.

LONG NOTES:

Roc’s 25 min presentation to the 37th International Conference on Biomedical & Cancer Research

Washington Post-  Some research suggests that genetics account for about 25 percent of a person’s life span, with diet, environment, exercise and other lifestyle factors making up the rest.  Eat a cup of beans, peas, or lentils every day. Eat a handful of nuts daily. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Eat meals with your family.

Lithium does not extend healthspan. My wife has been bipolar for over 40 years.  She has been very stable on it with no episodes since the birth of our youngest child who is now in his 30s. Reading the study, however, it is incorrect to say that Lithium is beneficial to longevity.  The study only compares Lithium to other psychotic medications to control bipolar disorder.  It specifically states (near the end) that it hasn’t analyzed the taking of Lithium by non-bipolar disorder sufferers. In summary, it reassures my wife that she is on the best medication for her condition, but doesn’t indicate that it will help her live longer than (say) me.

The role of obesity in prostate cancer risk is unclear. Many studies point to obese men having a lower overall risk, but a greater risk of aggressive disease and death.

In celebration of Black History Month, BCAN sat down with Dr. Cheryl T. Lee to get her thoughts about disparities in both the patient and healthcare provider communities.

WebMD-food swaps-eat fish not fried, use yogurt, not mayo,  skip fruit that’s canned in syrup, whipped cream cheese, A cup of orange juice fills your glass with about 21 grams of sugar and almost no fiber,  turkey sausage, frozen blueberries instead of ice cream,  instant raisin and spice oatmeal can be loaded with 15 grams (three teaspoons!) of sugar.

New mRNA technology, like some Covid vaccines, can reduce wrinkles and eliminate signs of skin aging in mice.

The attached paper from Harris and Karasik etal, on 100 year old rockfish, provides evidence of a similar longevity mechanism in humans. The aryl-hydrocarbon metabolism pathway is significantly associated with human survival to the 99th percentile. Aryl-hydrocarbon metabolism is controlled by genes associated with increased human and rockfish lifespan. These “Flavonoid metabolism” variants are found in the top 1% of longest-lived humans, responsible for cellular detoxification and immune protection. A genomics-metabolomics study of our Puget Sound rockfish could lead to new “bioinspired” medical breakthroughs for aging populations.

AARP fat burning – 1. your body will continue to burn more calories than normal for hours after a high-intensity workout. 2. TRY HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT). 3. You know that strength training can build muscle, but a growing body of research shows it can reduce fat, too.
