LONG NOTES:
The oldest person on earth now, Mrs. Morera, Spain, 115 years of age, attributes her long life to: “order, tranquility, good connection with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people “
Science 13 Jan pg 127 -FDA no longer requires animal testing for new drugs! There are now animal-free alternatives.
Sci 13 Jan pg 150 – Ischemia-reperfusion injury is tissue damage that occurs after oxygen deprivation, in strokes and heart attackes. This can be substantially decreased in those getting 500mg of vitamin C every 12 hours. High dose vitamin C may even be effective after the attack if given promptly.
Sci 20 Jan pg 224 – Stem cell factors reverse signs of aging in mice. A cocktail of proteins that reprogram adult cells into stem cells can turn back the clock for entire organisms. The developer received a Nobel Prize for his discovery. The Yamanaka factors reversed aging characteristics in mice. Rejuvenate Bio in San Diego is doing this work. It is the epigenetic changes that cause the aging, and these changes can be corrected.
Sci 20 Jan pg 251 – Drugs that target serotonin have broad uses in treating neuropsychiatric disorders, but side effects include weight gain. Serotonin has appetite surpressing activity. Serotonin in your brain regulates your mood. It’s often called your body’s natural “feel good” chemical. When serotonin is at normal levels, you feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier and calmer. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression. So avoid weight gain by staying cheerul and optimistic.
The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of simultaneous exercise and cognitive training on several cognitive domains in healthy older adults, in comparison with either training alone. The protocol involved two 30-min sessions per week for 24 weeks. A simultaneous exercise and cognitive training are more efficient than either training alone to improve executive function and baroreflex sensitivity.
From GRG: I agree that extrapolating from other organisms to humans should not be done without thoughtful care, but I don’t agree that it is “folly”. Rather, I think that non-human/non-primate models are highly valuable for getting ideas/potentials of supplements/drugs that might be useful for healthy human longevity. Ideally, they should be fully tested in humans before human usage is proven safe and effective. However, if they have been shown by long term usage in some human cohort to be safe (or only mildly problematic), then it is reasonable for a human to try them out – with careful dose buildup, if to pharmacological doses.
Israel’s Sheba Medical Center has developed CurQD – a botanical combination of Curcumin (Tumeric) and QingDai for treating Ulcerative Colitis. Phase 1 and 2 human trials were successful and a spin-off company Evinature is now marketing the product.
Ben Gurion University’s Dr Debra Toiber and her international colleagues have made more discoveries about the role of the protein SIRT6 in the aging process (see here previously). They have now found that SIRT6 prevents mitochondrial disfunction that causes brain diseases.
Treating Autism and Alzheimer’s. The American Friends of the Hebrew University is hosting an evening with the University’s Dr Haitham Amal on 31 Jan in Florida. Dr Amal will discuss the groundbreaking development of therapies for Autism and Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Amit Abraham of Ariel University’s Department of Physiotherapy uses Dynamic Neurocognitive Imagery (DNI) to improve the lives of amputees and Parkinson’s sufferers. DNI also improves the performance of dancers and athletes such as Israel’s Olympic rhythmic gymnastic team.
8 Digestive Health Supplements-Probiotics: Friendly Bacteria, may provide relief from diarrhea and may also relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Licorice has long been used to treat symptoms of indigestion like heartburn and acid reflux. several studies suggest that peppermint oil may lessen pain and bloating that comes with IBS. Naturalists have tried chamomile in an effort to treat digestive problems such as upset stomach, colic, and nausea, as well as anxiety and insomnia. ginger to treat stomachaches. In the West, ginger is used to relieve nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. supplement L-glutamine may help relieve diarrhea induced by surgery, infections, or stress. Psyllium is used as an ingredient in bulk laxatives. Artichoke leaf extract may relieve symptoms of indigestion. When used daily, the extract seems to lessen nausea, vomiting, gas, and abdominal pain. It also might help treat IBS and reduce cramps and abdominal pain.
