SUBJ: Research in mice and organisms has little correspondence in humans

SUBtitle: Roc is speaking at Cancer Conference soon

The Economist had a major report on the failure of national health systems to keep up with the failing health of the elderly globally. Please invite your friends to read this newsletter to stay healthy.  It is much easier to stay healthy than to regain health once it begins to fail.

LONG NOTES:

Roc is speaking at Cancer Conference soon!

[ed. Note: This is very discouraging, affecting many results reported in this newsletter] Reported studies in C. elegans show little predictive value for identifying drugs that extend lifespan in mice. The results therefore suggest caution should be used when making assumptions about the translatability of lifespan-extending compounds across species, including human intervention. Important article about a new study questioning the translatability of C. elegans, Drosophila and even mouse studies of pro-longevity compounds to humans.

New article by Sinclair very positive that epigenetic changes are the root of aging changes (just as they are the root of all previous human change from conception), but also highly positive that rejuvenation to a younger state is possible and actionable. Highlights
• Cellular responses to double-stranded DNA breaks erode the epigenetic landscape
• This loss of epigenetic information accelerates the hallmarks of aging
• These changes are reversible by epigenetic reprogramming
• By manipulating the epigenome, aging can be driven forward and backward

Effects of High-Intensity Resistance Training on Visceral Adipose Tissue and Abdominal Aortic Calcifications in Older Men with Osteosarcopenia . The study confirmed a positive impact of high-intensity resistance training on the metabolic and cardiovascular risk profile with respect to reduction of  visceral adipose tissue. No positive exercise effect on abdominal aortic calcifications volume was observed.

Sex isn’t just fun. It’s good for you too. Every orgasm releases a flood of the hormone oxytocin, which improves your mood. Couples who talk to each other about their wants and desires have better sex and a healthier relationship, research finds. Spice up your sex life by stretching your boundaries as a couple. Play around with foreplay. Touch each other in new ways.  Setting a date gives you time to prepare and something to look forward to.  Working out boosts stamina in bed and puts you in the mood. Not every romantic encounter has to end in sex. After a tough day, do something calming together to relax you. Listen to soft music. Practice relaxation exercises. Kegels strengthen the pelvic floor muscles that support your bladder. They also relax the vagina to make sex more comfortable. Take a trip together.

Researchers from Israel’s Bar-Ilan University have developed a peptide (small protein) that prevents the triggering of metastasis – secondary cancer. In the laboratory, it had 90% success on solid cancers and could be used in combination with other therapies.

Israelis liberDI has received clearance from the US FDA for its Digital Dialysis Clinic. The 3kg device allows patients to perform a 90 min dialysis at home or at work, by themselves, monitored by their physician using the advanced telemedicine capabilities of the system.

A 15-year study by researchers at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center showed that children suffering from Crohn’s disease and treated with nutrition had a lower chance of needing surgery in the first two years of the disease than those treated with steroids. There were many other benefits.

WebMD-Getting older has its perks. Older people might control their emotions better, and focus more on how to make the most of life. You’re more in tune with other people’s emotions in your 40s than at any other time in your life.  In a study of women 40 and over, researchers found that sexual satisfaction improved with age.  If you find things need to be spiced up, try some olive oil, herbs like rosemary and thyme, garlic, onion, peppers, or mustard. Our sleeping patterns can shift as we age, so we get sleepier earlier and wake up earlier. Once you hit your 70s, those migraines you may have had much of your life may go away. A study called the Longevity Project found that people who work hard at a job they enjoy live the longest. That, along with good friends and a good marriage, could be the key to sticking around a while. Self-esteem soars as you age. Baby boomers and older adults report less stress than their younger counterparts. The spaces between the bones in your spine — called vertebrae — get closer together. That can make you about an inch shorter as you get older.

A study published by the Journal of Internal Medicine says guys using androgenic anabolic steroids were 3 times as likely to die as those who didn’t.

Dietary choline intake is necessary to prevent systems‐wide organ pathology and reduce Alzheimer’s disease hallmarks. Dietary choline deficiency throughout adulthood induces motor impairments, weight gain, impaired glucose metabolism, cardiac and liver pathology, and exacerbates Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) hallmarks. Although foods rich in choline—liver, egg yolks, and red meat—tend to be higher in saturated fat, choline can also be found in foods lower in saturated fat including salmon, cod, tilapia, chicken breast, and legumes.

Today Bryan Johnson released his rejuvenation protocol onto YouTube.
His team of 30 doctors are working to slow down and effectively reverse his aging:

12 Worst Habits for Belly Fat -Eating While Distracted, Eating Too Fast, Getting Poor Sleep, Eating Late, Eating White Bread, Drinking Diet Soda, Skipping Meals, Eating ‘Low-Fat’ or ‘Fat-Free’ Food, Smoking, Eating on a Big Plate, Not Moving Enough

AARP foods for high blood pressure – the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, which is rich in fruits, veggies, lean meats, nuts, seeds, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Bananas, blueberries, spices, dark chocolate, nuts, yogurt, beets, fatty fish.

Our work on repurposing an existing drug (rilmenidine) for targeting ageing and age-related diseases may be of interest:

Rilmenidine is used to treat hypertension, with rare, non-severe side effects. We show in worms that it extends lifespan (~20%) and healthspan. Importantly for translational geroscience, we found lifespan and healthspan benefits in both young and old animals. BUT interesting, a 20% increase in lifespan in worms usually translates into a tiny benefit if any for humans. If it was a larger percentage, I would be more optimistic.
