NPR 10/23 3pm – Best Weight – Because researchers now know that obesity does not correlate with health, the BMI and ideal weight numbers are no longer relevant.  Only prejudice against overweight is still prevalent.  The speaker explained that if a person is leading a healthy lifestyle, getting exercise and a healthy diet, then body weight does not matter, and doctors and people in general should stop commenting on peoples’ weight, just as different gender, race, etc. are all just personal circumstance.

Pg 247-Science, misinformation and the role of education-competent outsiders must be able to evaluate science-based arguments-1. Is the source of this information credible, 2. Does the source have the expertise to vouch for the claim, 3. Is there a consensus among the relevant scientific experts? 4. Inquire about explanations, nature of the evidenc, or degree of uncertainty.

Scientists at Israel’s Assuta Ashdod Medical Center found why patients with a high-risk of coronary heart disease (e.g., some diabetics and smokers) have healthy arteries. Their endothelial progenitor cells have longer telomeres and greater function. It can help in developing preventative medicines.

 

Before aggressive chemo, Tzvia had ovarian tissue frozen. 20 years later, doctors at Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital defrosted and re-transplanted some of the tissue. It reversed her menopause and Tzvia has now given birth to a healthy baby girl – the longest ever time for a successful post-cancer transplant.
