2..Dirty air in cities causes Alzheimers, as well as stroke, depression, and hypertension.

3..g high cholesterol-150 min. brisk exercise a week, a heart-healthy diet that’s low in saturated and trans fats.

4..Fatty 15 is a supplement with many anti-aging claims.

5..U.S. centenarian population will quadruple over the next 30 years, currently 0.3 %.

6..Let’s Get Back to Health: 4 Easy Steps For Maintaining Health in 10+ minutes a day.

7..The USA recorded 2,012 measles cases, the highest total in more than 30 years .

8.. “…at least 4.6 million flu-related illnesses…49,000 hospitalizations and 1,900 deaths because of insufficient efforts to distribute and immunize the American public!

9..Poor heart health was nearly 80% more prevalent among night owls.

10..Gut Microbiota prevenbt Neurodegenerative Diseases.

11..α – lipoic acid reduces oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and brain atrophy.

12..Plants need dusting.

LONG NOTES:

From a clinical trial I am in: Adults aged 65 and older need:

At least 150 minutes a week (for example, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking. Or they need 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity such as hiking, jogging, or running.

At least 2 days a week of activities that strengthen muscles.

Activities to improve balance such as standing on one foot about 3 days a week.

National recommendation is 10,000 steps a day, and I averaged 9,200.

How do you know if you’re doing moderate or vigorous aerobic activity?

On a 10-point scale, where sitting is 0 and working as hard as you can is 10, moderate-intensity aerobic activity is a 5 or 6. It will make you breathe harder and your heart beat faster. A rule of thumb is that 1 minute of vigorous-intensity activity is about the same as 2 minutes of moderate-intensity activity. To gain health benefits, you need to do muscle-strengthening activities to the point where it’s hard for you to do another repetition without help. A repetition is one complete movement of an activity, like lifting a weight or doing one sit-up. Try to do 8-12 repetitions per activity, which counts as 1 set. Try to do at least 1 set of muscle-strengthening activities, but to gain even more benefits, do 2 or 3 sets.

NPR Science Friday did a program on how foul the air is in big cities. Dirty air causes Alzheimers, as well as stroke, depression, and hypertension. Long term exposure to fine particulate air pollution, common in large cities and especially near power plants, increases risks for these health problems.

AARP- Warning Signs of High Cholesterol Your annual checkup includes routine blood tests that measure cholesterol. Here’s what you need to know about high cholesterol — the causes, risk factors, treatments and best ways to prevent it. Preventing high cholesterol-150 brisk exercise a week, and eating a heart-healthy diet that’s low in saturated and trans fats.

Fatty 15 is a supplement with many anti-aging claims: Strengthens cell membranes by 80%, Improves mitochondrial function by up to 350%, helps lower bad LDL cholesterol and improves liver enzymes. The doctors at the Navy went on to develop a pure C15:0 supplement called fatty15, whose benefits to our health are now supported by more than 100 peer-reviewed studies.

U.S. centenarian population is projected to quadruple over the next 30 years, from an estimated 101,000 in 2024 to about 422,000 in 2054, according to projections from the U.S. Census Bureau. Centenarians currently make up just 0.03% of the overall U.S. population, and they are expected to reach 0.1% in 2054.

Let’s Get Back to Health: Easy Steps For Maintaining Health – Aging well is an important element of getting older. The New York Times recently had a piece on the topic outlining four areas of assessment that are predictive of getting older in a healthy way, including outlines of the:

Sitting-Rising Test (= 5 points for standing from sitting position and 5 points for sitting from standing with one point lost for each time you use a hand, arm, or any other objective to help you do either standing or sitting),

Walking Speed Assessment (= walking 13 feet in about 3 seconds),

Grip Strength Test (= walking for 60 seconds while carrying a heavy object, aka the farmer’s carry); and,

Single Leg Stand (= standing on one leg for a minimum of 10 seconds)!! Yikes!!!

You can check out the details here. And, you can practice these four simple tests every day to gain the strength and capability to meet the standards outlined above. All it takes is about 10+ minutes every morning when you get up and at ‘em!!

The USA recorded 2,012 measles cases, the highest total in more than 30 years – and, the incidence is expected to grow as immunizations continue to fall. One of the complications of a measles infection is the onset of Acute Encephalitis (brain swelling), which can turn into Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE). It’s a complication that leads to permanent brain damage.

The current CDC estimate is: “…at least 4.6 million flu-related illnesses…49,000 hospitalizations and 1,900 deaths this season, which (will run) through March or April…” – all because of insufficient efforts to distribute and immunize the American public!!

Science 19 Feb 2026 pg 779-Unhealthy night owls? Kianersi et al. examined over 300,000 middle-aged and older participants of the UK Biobank who completed surveys about chronotypes; that is, the time of day when they feel more alert and active (e.g., “morning person” versus “night person” or intermediate). Each participant received a heart health score based on their sleep quality, cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, exercise, nutrition, weight, and smoking status. Compared with intermediate participants, poor heart health was nearly 80% more prevalent among night owl participants. Night owls also had a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes after 14 years, suggesting that this group may need tailored interventions to mitigate cardiovascular risks. Pg 779 – Lungs have guts – Gut bacteria modulate the immune system through the release of microbial-derived compounds, including shortchain fatty acids (SCFAs). Maruyama et al. investigated the influence of the gut microbiome on the response to lung injury in mice. In a mouse model of sterile lung injury, a fiber-rich (FR) diet reduced inflammation compared with a fiber-free (FF) diet. Conversely, in a model of infectious lung injury, a FR diet exacerbated inflammation. The FR diet increased the production of SCFAs that in turn modulated the transcriptional signature of alveolar macrophages. These results suggest that injury-specific dietary intervention might accelerate recovery after lung injury.

The Effect of the Mediterranean Diet on Gut Microbiota and Its Impact on Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Narrative Review. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and gut-modulating due to its high vegetable, fruit, whole grain, and olive oil intake. It boosts beneficial GM and their byproducts, which suppresses inflammation and may slowing progression and improve PD, AD, MS, and NMOSD, influencing disease progression and symptoms. This review aims to investigate the interaction between GM composition and the MD and how they jointly influence neurodegenerative diseases such as AD, PD, MS, and NMOSD.

Linking Mechanisms of Lipoic Acid to Multiple Sclerosis: A Narrative Review
The effect of lipoic acid supplements on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been widely studied, yet the evidence remains inconclusive, and more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions. This review aimed to comprehensively assess the impact of α – lipoic acid (ALA) on oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and brain atrophy.

Roc, is is often hard to change the conditions of our life. So I have plants but they need dusting too! And I find it hard to do that. What would you suggest? Patience. Your plants appreciate it.

LONG NOTES:

The Turmeric Solution For Effective Depression Tx?? – A recent notice that floated across my inbox from WebMD suggested that the use of the spice turmeric for spice turmeric might be effective in the treatment of depression.

AARP-6 medicines that may harm your kidneys-kidney disease is among the top 10 causes of death. People who are most vulnerable to medication-induced adverse kidney events include those 65 and older, those with underlying kidney disease, people who are dehydrated, patients with low blood pressure, and those who have other health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or have had heart surgery or transplantation. NSAIDs , Antibiotics, Laxatives, Contrast dyes, acid suppressants include omeprazole (Prilosec) and esomeprazole (Nexium), famotidine (Pepcid) and calcium carbonate (Tums), A 2007 review of supplement-induced kidney dysfunction lists more than 15 herbs and supplements reported to have caused kidney problems, including chromium, creatine, licorice, willow bark, and yohimbe.

Science 11 Dec pg 1084 – Cancer fighting cells made in body help patients. Approach could be faster than CAR-T cells. Immune cells engineered to home in on cancer cells like guided missiles can be lifesavers—if patients can get them in time. Currently, their T cells must be harvested and given a surface protein, a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR), through genetic manipulation, a slow and expensive lab process. Making the cells directly inside the body should be faster, and early clinical data now suggest the strategy can work. In one of the first trials, the approach induced the so-called in vivo CAR-T cells in four patients with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, and evicted the malignant cells from their bone marrow.

Science 11 Dec pg 1107 – To deal with frequent nightmares, 3 steps. Use the waking imagination to rewrite the dream with a happier outcome. Dream engineering includes having pleasant music, light, and comfort items where you sleep. Try to promote lucid dreaming – you set intentions and repeat phrases like “I will remember I’m dreaming” before sleep.

From Kevin Fickenscher: A recent notice that floated across my inbox from WebMD suggested that the use of the spice turmeric for spice turmeric might be effective in the treatment of depression. Turmeric is a common ingredient for many Indian and Asian foods and is found in the root stalk of curcumin. Wowser!!! Evidently, it works by settling the immune system a bit and the reason depression is impacted is that there is growing evidence that inflammation of the immune system is part of the problem.

Healthcare costs in the US are 20+% of GDP. In England, 12%, in France, 3.3%. Cutting federal aid for health insurance will dramatically raise healthcare costs because many people will have to go to the emergency room instead of getting doctor care.

A recent report came out about the “health benefits” of switching to Green Tea as an alternative to coffee. First, green tea is widely consumed throughout the world as a $300 billion business and dates back to 3000 BC in China. It is derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant and holds anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which are two elements that help to prolong life.

Check Out My New Book (!!!!): The Persistence Factor – www.amazon.com – focused on “how” to make change happen in the face of challenges requiring focused of energy and commitment toward solving problems over time…like the problems we face in today…

“White Christmas has endured for decades because it offers us something we desperately need: a reminder of the transformative power of generosity and community. [The] story teaches us that true fulfillment comes not from what we achieve for ourselves, but from what we do for others.”

Resting-State fMRI Reveals the Neural Correlates of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Vascular Cognitive Impairment. This review not only summarizes the existing evidence on the efficacy of acupuncture in treating VCI, (Vascular Cognitive Impairment) but also synthesizes the current evidence from rs-fMRI studies to elucidate how acupuncture improves cognitive function in VCI patients through central mechanisms.

New Yorker Aug 11 pg 26… Live long and prosper: The seminal paper in Cell had 12 hallmarks of aging, including DNA instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, chronic inflammation, cellular senescence when burned-out cells start oozing toxic sludge, and stem cell exhaustion. Caloric restriction can shrink muscle mass, lower your libido, and suppress neuronal function.Among the elderly, having difficulty bathing is as grimly determinative of mortality as having heart failure. Only a quarter of the slowest walkers over 85 survived as long as the fastest walkers. Numerous papers have concluded that genes determine only 7 to 30% of longevity, while your behavior has a much larger vote.

Impact of diet and exercise on mitochondrial quality and mitophagy in Alzheimer’s disease. a healthy diet and regular exercise play a crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial quality and mitochondrial function, in turn, enhancing mitophagy and synaptic activities that delay AD in the elderly populations.

The Potential of the Mediterranean Diet to Improve Mitochondrial Function in Experimental Models of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome. The term “Mitochondria nutrients” has been adopted in recent years, and it depicts the adequate nutrients to keep proper mitochondrial function. Different experimental models show that components of the MD, including polyphenols, plant-derived compounds, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, can improve mitochondrial metabolism, biogenesis, and antioxidant capacity.

High-intensity Interval Training Improves Mitochondrial Function and Suppresses Thrombin Generation in Platelets undergoing Hypoxic Stress. We conclude that the high-intensity interval training simultaneously improves mitochondrial bioenergetics and suppresses dynamic mitochondrial functionality and thrombin generation in platelets undergoing hypoxia.

Endurance exercise rescues progeroid aging and induces systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation in mtDNA mutator mice. The systemic mitochondrial rejuvenation through endurance exercise promises to be an effective therapeutic approach to mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and related comorbidities.

Red yeast rice

SUMMARY: The extract of red yeast rice (RYR) is the most effective cholesterol-lowering nutraceutical on the market. In particular, its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of monacolin K within the extract (up to 10 mg/day). safe and effective. However, red rice is often mislabelled and misused, in which case it is dangerous. See below DANGER FOR RED YEAST RICE.

Red Yeast Rice for Hypercholesterolemia – The extract of red yeast rice (RYR) is the most effective cholesterol-lowering nutraceutical on the market. In particular, its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of monacolin K within the extract (up to 10 mg/day). Consuming monacolin K on a daily basis reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol plasma levels between 15% and 25% within 6 to 8 weeks. The monacolin K found in RYR is a safe and effective supplement for managing mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia in people with no additional cardiovascular risk factors. The most recent, by Gerard et al., included 20 studies with RYR doses varying between 1,200 mg and 4,800 mg/day and containing from 4.8 mg to 24 mg of monacolin K. The meta-analysis demonstrated that RYR reduced LDL-C by an average of 1.02 mmol/L (39.4 mg/dL) after 2 to 24 months of treatment compared to placebo. This effect on LDL lowering was not different from moderate-intensity statins (0.03 mmol/L) such as pravastatin 40 mg and lovastatin 20 mg. Recent concerns have been voiced regarding the safety of RYR after publication of case reports that claimed toxicity.48 However, according to a recent meta-analysis of 53 RCTs with a total of 8,535 patients (4,437 in the RYR treatment arm and 4,303 in the control arm), use of monacolin K is not associated with an increased risk of muscular adverse events (OR 0.94, 95% CI, 0.53–1.65).49 Furthermore, the study demonstrated a reduced risk of nonmuscular adverse events (OR 0.59, 95% CI, 0.50–0.69) and serious adverse events (OR 0.54, 95% CI, 0.46–0.64) compared to the control group.

DANGER FOR RED YEAST RICE.

“A products analysis report from 2010 tested 12 products commercially available in the U.S. and reported that per 600 mg capsule, total monacolins content ranged from 0.31 to 11.15 mg. A 2017 study tested 28 brands of red yeast rice supplements purchased from U.S. retailers, stating “the quantity of monacolin K varied from none to prescription strength.”

[[RR comment — Somehow I don’t think USP would be impressed with a 30-fold concentration range of the active ingredient.]]

[[Note: Monacolin K is the same compound as lovastatin.]] “Different strains of Monascus fungus will produce different amounts of monacolins. The ‘Went’ strain of Monascus purpureus (purpureus=dark red in Latin), when properly fermented and processed, will yield a dried red yeast rice powder that is approximately 0.4% monacolins, of which roughly half will be monacolin K (chemically identical to lovastatin).”

“Many of these avoid FDA regulation by not having any appreciable monacolin content. Their labels and websites say no more than “fermented according to traditional Asian methods” or “similar to that used in culinary applications”. The labeling on these products often says nothing about cholesterol lowering. If products do not contain lovastatin, do not claim to contain lovastatin, and do not make a claim to lower cholesterol, they are not subject to FDA action.”

[[RR comment: I’d heard years ago that red rice yeast sold as cholesterol-lowering had to have the lovastatin removed prior to sale. Not sure if that was true or for which country.]]

Safety: “The safety of red yeast rice (RYR) products has not been established. Some supplements have been found to contain high levels of citrinin, which can be toxic to the liver, kidneys, and cellular DNA. Commercial products also have highly variable amounts of monacolins and rarely declare this content on the label, making risk assessment difficult. Ingredient suppliers have been suspected of “spiking” red yeast rice preparations with purified lovastatin. One published analysis reported several commercial products as being almost entirely monacolin K—which would occur if the drug lovastatin was illegally added—rather than the expected composition of many monacolin compounds.”

[[RR comment: Wiki page on citrinin states, “Citrinin is a mycotoxin which is often found in food. It is a secondary metabolite produced by fungi that contaminates long-stored food and it can cause a variety of toxic effects, including kidney, liver and cell damage. Citrinin is mainly found in stored grains, but sometimes also in fruits and other plant products.”]]

“In a press release the FDA “…is warning consumers to not buy or eat red yeast rice products… may contain an unauthorized drug that could be harmful to health.” The rationale for “harmful to health” was that consumers might not understand that the dangers of monacolin-containing red yeast rice are the same as those of prescription statin drugs.”

“There are reports in the literature of muscle myopathy and liver damage resulting from red yeast rice usage. From a review: “The potential safety signals of myopathies and liver injury raise the hypothesis that the safety profile of RYR is similar to that of statins. Continuous monitoring of dietary supplements should be promoted to finally characterize their risk profile, thus supporting regulatory bodies for appropriate actions.” The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources added to Food concluded that when red yeast rice preparations contained monacolins, the Panel was unable to identify an intake that it could consider as safe.”

Bottom line, Roc, red rice yeast can be dangerous. The dangers can arise from A) people thinking that it’s safe and has no side effects, B) people consuming one of the RRY products that is high in lovastatin, while also taking a doctor-prescribed lovastatin pills, and C) people being screwed out of their money by RRY products that contain zero lovastatin, and D) buying herbs that are illegally spiked by prescription drugs.

That last one reminds me of herbal supplements that were marketed as “calming.” Yes, they worked, but it was because they contained a sleeping pill drug. Ditto for an herbal supplement that was marketed as “male enhancement.” It contained sildenafil, a.k.a. the ingredient in Viagra.

Herbal supplements, in general, are risky, and I think you are NOT doing justice to your readers by your stating a blanket “they’re safe.”

There are so many exceptions and complexities such as drug-drug interactions.

LONG NOTES

Using data from studies that have followed participants for decades, researchers found that long-term consumption of two or more servings per week of yogurt was tied to lower rates of proximal colorectal cancer positive for Bifidobacterium, a bacterial species found in yogurt.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults of legal drinking age (21 years or older) choose not to drink alcohol or to drink alcohol in moderation (2 drinks or fewer in a day for men, 1 drink or fewer in a day for women). Each year, about 20,000 adults in the United States die from alcohol-associated cancers. It is estimated most of these deaths may have been avoided if all adults had followed the recommended limits on alcohol use in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans instead of drinking above them. Breast cancer is the most common alcohol-associated cancer among women. Colorectal cancer is the most common alcohol-associated cancer among men.

Adults should get 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly. Nearly half of our participants in young adulthood had suboptimal levels of physical activity, which was significantly associated with the onset of hypertension. Achieving at least twice the current minimum adult [physical activity] guidelines may be more beneficial for the prevention of hypertension than simply meeting the minimum guidelines,” the researchers wrote in their paper. And by age 60, between 80 to 90 percent of Black men and women had hypertension, compared with just below 70 percent for White men and around half of White women.

Global average life expectancy has more than doubled since 1900. We can expect to live more than twice as long as our friends in 1900. As the chart shows, global average life expectancy was just 32 years at the beginning of the 20th century. This was a short life by today’s standards: in 2023, the average life expectancy had increased to 73 years. That’s 41 years longer.
